Ok Trish.
Say the NFSP were not the basket case they obviously are.
Say they were a nice little benevolent organisation doing the best for their members.
Would it be acceptable for the CWU to put the boot in then?
The NFSP may have already been on it's way out but the CWU has effectively finished them off.
I'm a trade unionist first and a CWU member second and i'm not comfortable with that at all,the fact that you call me a union basher for this says more about your lack of understanding of the origins of the union movement than it does about me.

Sorry fishtank. I am very aware of the origins of the trade union movement thanks. I know about the blanketeers, the chartists, Luddites, the combinations and the struggle for the working class over the past centuries. However you cannot put principled scenarios that do not fit. The fact is that the Federation is not a 'bottom up' union that listens to its members voices.

I would understand your position if the purpose for recruiting from the Fed was just to increase the membership. It is not! Members are clearly unhappy and their discontent can be seen on their facebook page. They are the ones driving this, not the CWU. I believe they will show their discontent by talking with their feet. It is their choice and to be honest, who would not want a democratic union as opposed to one that makes decisions on behalf of its membership without actually putting it to them or even taking in to consideration the financial consequences

Had the Postmasters left the NFSP,formed their own organisation and asked the CWU to be taken under their umbrella or even simply voted with their feet and then joined the CWU i would have agreed with you but the fact is the CWU is directly targeting existing NFSP members asking them to defect to the CWU.

Join the CWU for less than half the cost of NFSP full membership, call now on:020 8971 7325

It is a rather low trick and in my opinion...cheapens the Union....my Union.

It would take time and a lot of money to do that fishtank. Something they did not have. I hear your angst but the fact is they needed support and the CWU gave it to them. They are workers doing the same work as CWU members so it is not surprising they turned to us. I welcome them with open arms and hope that the CWU can improve their 'lot' as I know from this social network that many are struggling. These are people that have invested a lot into the Post Office both personally and financially. They have asked for help from an active and democratic union and by golly we are going to give it to them

I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree over the methods used,my second point though is how will union recognition work when dealing with such blurred lines between employer and employee especially after separation from RMG.
I can see a continued need to fight Government interference but what shape will POL take?
How can you fight something when you have such a large stake in it's survival.
It's a problem all unions have but seems to be more relevant in POL especially with subbies who have their whole financial future invested in the business.
You could argue that getting this balance wrong is partly what killed the NFSP.
How do you stop that happening with the CWU?

Fishtank, I assume you are expressing concerns as opposed to wanting answers.

Postman, all sub postmasters/mistresses received a recruitment pack and DVD through the post over the weekend. If you go on the Postmasters in the CWU site on facebook you will see how they have been received. It is early days yet so there are no numbers but watch this space

"No-one has the slightest clue what Mutualisation may bring to the Post Office...you included".

Hi

If Subbie is who I think He is, then those words certainly make me Smile. I think this Guy knows more about Mutualisation than Louie Walsh knows about Crap over 25s. :dance

Given the latest utterances from the General Secretary I am twice as optimistic.
We recommend that you do not join the CWU. You would be choosing to join a union that has the reputation of being left wing and militant, and who have taken more industrial action in the last 10 years than any other union.
I don't know. Maybe that's why he left the CWU. Didn't like the action!

May the action be with you

Patience Mr Postman, the membership pack only arrived today, and I guess there are still more to arrive over the next couple of days.
Then the recipients will have to digest the offer, and return the application form, all this takes time so it will be a couple of weeks before anyone could answer your question.

Fishy
Postmasters are leaving their Union because it has stopped conducting itself as a Union. This is not poaching, it is picking up survivors from a sinking ship.

I would guess that the CWU would have to change tact...
For your information, I have attached the response from POL to this LTB. POL has simply reiterated its view that our members are overpaid (by one-third) compared with people working in franchised and Sub Post Offices. Clearly, POL is ignoring the fact our members are highly skilled, professional individuals, who are dedicated to their jobs whilst providing excellent customer service. Our members deserve better!
Sensible answers please.
