Purple post box in Inverness is one of four digitally activated postboxes in the UK to honour mums

The mystery behind a purple post box outside Inverness Town House has finally been revealed.

The transformation from the usual red colour has prompted public curiosity.

But Royal Mail has now revealed it is one of four digitally activated postboxes across the UK, chosen as a reminder of the heightened importance of sending a Mother’s Day card or gift this year.

Each design incorporates images of Royal Mail colleagues’ mums containing a QR code which customers can scan on their mobile phones and watch a short, heartfelt film featuring the employees.

In it, they discuss their relationship with their mother and how recent lockdown restrictions may be impacting on them.

They include Sarah Love, a collection driver at the Inverness Mail Centre.


The chosen postboxes will be decorated for a month and are also located in Liverpool, Pontyprid and Lisburn in Northern Ireland.

Nick Landon, chief commercial officer at Royal Mail said: "This year more than ever, it is important to let loved ones know that they are in your thoughts.

"Mother’s Day is set to be a little different than usual this year, and as so many prepare to spend the day away from their loved ones, sending a letter, card or parcel through the post is the perfect way to remind your mum – wherever she may be – just how much you love her and how much she really means to you."
