Parcel delivery was delayed after the roof caved in

A Royal Mail centre which was forced to close after heavy rainfall caused its roof to collapse has reopened for service.

The major mail hub in Padge Road, Beeston, was evacuated on Wednesday, June 17, after huge downpours caused its roof to "give way".

It serves areas across both Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, including Beeston, Stapleford, Chilwell and Toton.

Those waiting for deliveries had been warned about delays over the days following the incident, but a Royal Mail spokeswoman confirmed the centre had today (June 19) reopened.

The spokeswoman added "all is back up and running".

Flooding caused widespread chaos across the county on Wednesday evening and into the following day.

Mark Harper, a Royal Mail worker from Beeston who is also acting regional secretary for Communication Workers Union, previously said it had caused "massive disruption" to mail delivery services in the area.

A number of businesses and homes in the region were affected by heavy rainfall.

In Ilkeston, homes were flooded by sewage water in the space of just 17 minutes, as captured by one resident on CCTV.

Wollaton Road in Beeston also resembled a river, as fire crews had to rescue eight people and lead them to safety.

Every one says the roof caved in. I can definitely say it didn't. Just flooded through the vents and left a lot of standing water near the imps.

It's been a leaky roof for years. The torrential rain just exacerbated it. The thunderstorms this coming weekend should prove interesting ...
