Marion Fellows called for greater provision of Personal Protective Equipment and proper reward and recognition for postal workers – as well as an end to advertising mail.

Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows has called for improved Postal Workers’ pay and conditions and for Royal Mail to be brought back into public ownership.

In a letter to Royal Mail CEO Rico Back, sent on National Postal Workers’ Day, Mrs Fellows called for greater provision of Personal Protective Equipment and proper reward and recognition for postal workers – as well as an end to advertising mail.

The SNP MP has also written to Business Secretary Alok Sharma, urging him to support these calls, and for the UK Government to investigate bringing Royal Mail back into public ownership – to ensure the interests of its workers and the public it serves are met.

Mrs Fellows said: “Royal Mail postal workers have continued to serve communities across the UK throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and deserve to be properly recognised and remunerated for their work through improved pay and conditions, and the Royal Mail being brought back into public ownership to reinstate the public’s right to oversee this.

“Two simple ways of protecting our postal workers and recognising their contributions is by ensuring the PPE they have is adequate and they have enough of it, and bringing an end to advertising mail, which is putting workers and wider communities at unnecessary risk.

“Coronavirus has highlighted exactly how essential they are.”
