2 Croydon police officers in hospital after crashing into a Royal Mail lorry

Two police officers are in hospital after their marked police car collided with a Royal Mail lorry on the Purley Way in Croydon.

The crash happened towards the Lombard Roundabout end of the major road, near the junction with Fairmead Road, shortly before 2am on Tuesday, April 21.

As well as the officers the driver of the lorry was also taken to hospital.

A Met Police spokesperson said the injuries suffered by everyone involved in the crash are believed to be non-life threatening.

There was a large emergency services response with three ambulances spotted as well as multiple police cars.

Road closures were put in place and a cordon was still in place hours later in the morning.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “At 1.55am a marked police vehicle was in collision with a Royal Mail HGV on Purley Way in Croydon.

“The driver of the HGV and the two officers inside the police vehicle received non-life-threatening injuries. The officers were taken to hospital for treatment.

“There have been no arrests.

“As is routine [in a crash involving a police vehicle], the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards will be informed.”

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We dispatched three ambulance crews, an incident response officer and an advanced paramedic to the scene.

We also dispatched London's Air Ambulance trauma team in a car.

"We treated three people at the scene and took them to hospital."
