Mail delivered to resident 7 years late after post 'found' in Leicestershire house

Royal Mail has said the post is now being delivered to its rightful owners



Households across Leicestershire have been receiving mail at least seven years late after long-lost post was recovered from a house in the county.

At least two people from Leicestershire, including one person from Melton, are known to have received mail this week that dates back at least seven years.

The resident from Melton, who did not want to be named said they had received 17 letters, including car tax discs, bank statements and even cheques, dating as far back as 2013.


The 'historic mail' was handed into Wigston Delivery Office last week, following a 'police operation' according to the Royal Mail.

The postal service also said they understood the mail had been found by police in the home of a person who 'did not currently work for Royal Mail'.


As well as the historic mail, the Melton resident also received a letter from the Royal Mail's Leicester Delivery Office manager Ryan Titmas explaining that the mail had been recovered from the home of an 'ex-employee' as the result of a 'police investigation'.

The letter reads: "I'm writing to apologise for the significant delay caused to the attached mail, which has recently been recovered from the home of an ex-employee as the result of a police investigation.

"I'd like to offer my sincere apologies for any inconvenience or distress you may experience as a result of receiving this mail after such a long time. We take the delay of mail very seriously.


"I'm very sorry we've let you down on this occasion and I hope you'll accept my apologies for any concern this incident may cause."

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Last week, managers at Wigston Delivery Office were handed a number of historic mail items following a police operation.
