STRIKES by postal counter staff have caused major disruption during two days of industrial action at Haverhill post office.
The post office in High Street was closed on Saturday morning after management failed to provide cover for striking counter staff.

Customers were left queuing on to the street when a further strike was held all day on Tuesday, although skeleton staffing levels were maintained by management.

The strikes were called by the Communications Workers Union (CWU) in protest at Royal Mail plans to regrade staff, which would result in lower wage structures, and close up to 2,500 sub-post offices and about one quarter of larger, or ‘Crown’, post offices over a five-year period.

Since industrial action began in June, counter staff at Haverhill have taken part in 11 days of strike action.

Tim Pavelin, CWU representative for Haverhill, said: “We have successfully managed to get the management back to the negotiating table but we are still waiting for a suitable offer to be made.â€
