YOUR report "Red faces at Royal Mail" highlights that the days when a letter, or postcard, posted at a main Post Office before midnight would be reliably delivered first post the next morning anywhere on the UK mainland have vanished.
Indeed, being reliably delivered at a future undefined date seems to be a triumph of hope over reality these days. I doubt this is confined to the Chelmsford sorting office.
For some years the delivery of mail to the wrong house has been a regular occurrence.
Recently, packets that don't fit through the letter box have just been deposited on the doorstep, without even ringing the bell.
I have returned home to find 'signed for' packets on the doorstep, not necessarily for this address.
A few years ago a "guaranteed before 1pm" packet was delivered at around 3.30 while I was being assured over the phone that it was recorded as delivered before 1pm.
Correspondence with Royal Mail elicited that some managers recorded the delivery time (estimated by the postie) before they had left the office.
These examples show shortcomings by postal workers but say much more about management. Procedures and management allow, nay encourage, this and senior management allow (encourage) branch management to operate this way. My "guaranteed delivery" package indicates that those at the very top are aware of the shortcomings.
Sort the management out, starting at the top, and good service will follow.
Don't blame the postie.
