Royal Mail could lose its bulk-mailing arm

The Royal Mail's bulk mail services could soon be deregulated, according to a recent report from Postcomm.

Under the proposals put forward in the report, which served as a strategy review of the postal sector beyond 2010, bulk mail could be separated from the main body of operations of the Royal Mail in a two-stage process at some point in the near future.

The report stated: "Although we see merit in removing the remaining bulk mail services from the universal service in 2010 to afford Royal Mail fuller flexibility for larger customers, there are risks that need to be considered before this step is taken.

"To overcome these potential risks, a two-stage approach might be appropriate.
"As a first step, the uniform tariff constraint for bulk mail might be removed, thereby addressing the issue of pricing flexibility....then consideration could be given to the services being taken out of the universal service at a later date."

The potential developments would come as good news for direct marketing companies who would benefit from both more flexible pricing for delivery but also from more efficient marketing campaigns allowed for by advances in data capture and data suppression technologies.

Isn't this a good thing??? Failing on DSA becomes an option, causing the competition to attempt a door to door delivery network, which would take an age to set up, inflating their costs, with their customers coming back to RM???

Problem is now though, that customers wanting to come back because of poor service from "the competition" are being told that as we have now shed the excess jobs and vehicles created by your earlier defection - we can no longer accommodate you - tough. This little nugget of information came via a number of managers after I commented on a customer complaining about his regular items being late - when he queried it with the sender they told him it was due to the "new" collection company being unreliable and they weren't happy either.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile
