Gloves Off as German Post Monopoly Ends.

Post by NEWS »

Deutsche Post used to be the only game in town for letter delivery in Germany. But the last traces of its monopoly will disappear on Jan. 1, 2008. New letter delivery companies are gearing up to grab a piece of the pie -- and they're hungry for profits.

Sending a letter in Germany used to be such a simple thing. You put your letter in an envelope, slapped on a stamp, and popped it in the familiar yellow Deutsche Post mailbox. End of story.

But not for much longer. Deutsche Post is about to lose its monopoly on the postal service. And after that, customers will be able to choose from new green, red and blue postboxes on the street as well as old yellow.

As part of a European Union move to introduce greater competition in letter delivery services, Germany on Jan. 1, 2008 will abolish Deutsche Post's exclusive right to deliver letters under 50 grams -- the last monopoly left for what used to be the only game in town.

they are having major problems at home

Post by F0zziebear »

Germany, DeutschePost is having major problems. This is because competitors have found it much easier to set up rival regional postal businesses. This hasn't happened in the UK as our country is geographically different, and our prices are already so low.

Leighton made it clear that RM have no ambition to buy companies or expand abroad.

I thought RM bought loads of companies across Europe a few years ago. They then used that as an excuse that there was no money in the pot for our pay rise back then. I may be wrong, senility may be setting in early.
