Postal worker stabbed by needle

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

A postwoman faces an agonising wait to see if she has contracted any diseases after she was stabbed in the hand with a hypodermic needle in Herefordshire.

The syringe entered Jane Hillman's hand as she put mail through a letterbox on Rylands Road in Leominster on Tuesday.

Royal Mail has launched an inquiry into the incident and suspended deliveries to the property in question.

It will be at least three months before the mother-of-two can be sure her health has not been affected.

She told BBC Hereford and Worcester she was as well as could be expected and described what happened to her as an "everyday hazard".

She added that it was annoying drug abuse was so common in places like Leominster.

happened to me once years ago unloading bags, had one over my shoulder when i dropped it one of the lads pointed at my arm as i looked down blood was pumping out of me,lino took bag and inspected it but found nothing, he said people were dumping needles into post boxes and as we pulled the mail out of the box the needles were getting caught in the sack,so me of to hospital blood pumping out all over by the time i got to the nurse the blood had stopped and all i had to show the casualty nurse on a friday night was a small deep hole in my arm which must have punctured a vein,i felt like a fraud compared with some of the people around me,but that three month wait before you can have the blood test and then going for your results is not what you would call one of the highlights of my life

I can't imagine what that must have been like, but let's hope the postwoman has a similar happy ending to the whole thing as you did.

If it's any consolation, it's very difficult to contract HIV, so that would be very unlikely at least. That's horrible though.

Hepatits A & B are easier to contract, and while not as final as HIV, can have serious consequences. ( BTW, the HIV virus can only last a couple of hours in the atmosphere, which is why it is difficult to contract it from a discarded needle....not impossible sadly. )

In a previous job, my driver's mate got jabbed one time ( we were working on the dust at the time ) & he wasn't sure about whether it was a needle that jabbed him ( through quality gloves ), and just wanted to carry on working, but I shanghai-ed him up to the ozzy & got on to the council for them to organise a needle team to litter pick the area....since then, he's got the all clear & become a daddy to a lovely little girl. I wish all the same level of good news to the Herefeordshire postwoman - the job's hard enough without the threat of needles.
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?
