NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A man who reportedly told police officers he was the "royal mail ambassador" after neighbors in a North Charleston community reported him for stealing mail was arrested Sunday with roughly 80 pieces of mail belonging to up to 20 people.

The North Charleston Police Department said that 44-year-old Canaan Canaanittes Heyward was arrested around 2 a.m. Sunday in the area of Brossy Circle and Dorchester Road after residents reported seeing a man tampering with mailboxes.

Officers arrived and found Heyward, who reportedly told officers he was the "royal mail ambassador." He was detained after police noticed a piece of mail in one of his bags "that clearly did not belong to him," according to NCPD. Officers searched him and his belongings, and found around 80 pieces of mail and packages addressed to up to 20 different people, some of it opened and dating back as far as March 27, officers said. Amongst the items found in his possession, a credit card and health insurance cards were also reportedly found, along with a screwdriver and hammer that investigators believe he used to pry open mailboxes in the area.
