A large Royal Mail lorry hit a rail bridge in Cardiff city centre on Monday evening causing trains chaos. All lines were temporarily blocked through Cardiff Central on Monday from around 7pm after the large vehicle struck the bridge at Bute Street beside the John Lewis department store.
South Wales Police officers were at the scene with the vehicle stuck under the bridge. The road is closed between Custom House Street and Callaghan Square.
A spokesperson for the force said: "We're at the scene of a serious collision on John Street, Butetown, Cardiff. The road is currently closed in both directions from John Street to the Golden Cross pub, Bute Street. It is expected to remain closed for some time; please avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. We're grateful for your patience." At around 8.45pm National Rail confirmed all lines had reopened but rail services travelling through Cardiff Central have been severely delayed.
A spokesperson for National Rail said: "Lines have now reopened following a road vehicle has collided with a bridge in the Cardiff Central area. While service recovers, trains running through this station may still be cancelled, revised, delayed by up to 60 minutes or diverted."
By 10pm pictures showed the lorry had been prised from beneath the bridge, with most of its roof ripped off. By 11.30pm delays to rail services were ongoing.
One eyewitness, Natalie Edwards, told us she heard an "almighty crash". She said: "We are staying in the Cardiff Marriott with the window open and we heard an almighty crash. Jumped to the window, looked around and saw this."
