ROYAL Mail has confirmed a major programme of repair and restoration works will take place at the historic Strabane Delivery Office.

It follows lobbying from West Tyrone SDLP MLA., Daniel McCrossan, who had called for action after concerns were raised about the poor condition of the building.

As reported in this newspaper in August, Mr McCrossan wrote to Royal Mail management on the issue calling for immediate refurbishment works on the landmark building.

He had said the exterior of the Castle Street Grade B2 listed building, in its current state, was “a disgrace and a disservice” to the local community.

Royal Mail subsequently agreed to conduct a review of the condition of the building with a view to seeing how it could be improved.

Following a site visit and inspection by consultants, it was determined that part of the property was allowing dampness and water ingress to affect the internal fabric.

It was thus recommended that a scope of repair works be implemented.

Royal Mail has now committed to a comprehensive scheme of works beginning in November and due for completion in March 2026.

The works will include repairs to rainwater goods, windows, security grilles, external doors, roof slates, masonry and internal finishes, as well as full redecoration where required.

A spokesperson said: "Following a review of its condition by our property team, we have decided to undertake repair works on Strabane Delivery Office.

"Subject to health and safety processes and weather conditions, we aim to commence work in November 2025.”

Daniel McCrossan says its welcome news.

"This is a very positive outcome for Strabane," he said. "The Delivery Office is not only a working facility but also a landmark building in our town.

"For too long, it has been allowed to fall into poor condition and I was determined that action be taken to protect and restore it.

"I am pleased that Royal Mail have listened to the concerns I raised on behalf of local people and that a wide-ranging programme of works has now been confirmed."

He added: "This is good news for Strabane and I will continue to press for the project to be delivered in full and on time.

"Protecting and enhancing our town's built heritage is vitally important for the community and for future generations."
