Royal Mail leaves Colchester sheltered housing without post for weeks

FED-UP residents say they were left without post for weeks after a mix-up with postmen getting access to their sheltered housing.

People living in Enoch House, in Hawthorn Avenue, Greenstead, were left scratching their heads after they stopped getting mail.

Mick Willett, 63, who moved to Colchester four months ago to be closer to his children who live in the area, became aware after parcels he had ordered stopped turning up.

Things became even more puzzling when he got something delivered to his daughter's house just down the road and it arrived.

Mr Willett claims when he stopped a Royal Mail postman in the street he was told they didn't deliver to his address anymore.

Building - Enoch House (Image: Newsquest) He said: “It is frustrating, I’m waiting for my post to come, and then blaming the companies for when I don’t get it.

“It’s an absolute disgrace to make a decision to stop sending out mail without telling us.

“If they told us, we could have done something about it, I would have kicked-off good and proper.”

Speaking up - Mick Willett (Image: Newsquest) Mr Willett visited the Royal Mail delivery office, in Moorside, on Saturday and picked up 15 letters which had been sent weeks ago, including a hospital appointment, council bill and an expired wedding invitation.

He said: “I want the post to arrive and for it to be on time, we’re all entitled to post.

“The worst part is that they didn’t tell us about it. If I hadn’t asked the postman, I wouldn’t be the wiser.

He’s calling for the issue to be fixed by installing an access button for tradesmen as the main problem is they can’t get inside to access the individual post boxes inside.

A spokesperson for Colchester Borough Homes (CBH), which operates Enoch House, said: “We are aware of the concerns raised by a resident at Enoch House regarding delays to mail deliveries.

“We want to make it absolutely clear that this issue lies with Royal Mail.

“We have not received any indication from Royal Mail that they were ceasing deliveries, nor have we been informed of any safety concerns relating to our residents.

“At no point has Colchester Borough Homes advised Royal Mail to suspend delivery services to Enoch House or any of our sheltered schemes. In fact, we’ve had no similar issues at any other scheme.

“Our priority is ensuring that all residents receive the services they are entitled to without unnecessary disruption.”

After the Gazette contacted Royal Mail, a spokesperson said the issue has now been fixed.

They said: “Posties were unable to access this address because they were not provided with the updated access code for the main door.

"The issue has now been resolved and deliveries have resumed daily.”

I've never understood the logic in placing the boxes behind a door entry system. Whatever time is saved not having to climb close stairs is lost standing at the door trying to get in. And all the trade buttons desperately need updated to our awful new delivery hours.
