Royal Mail automates 90% of parcel operations

Royal Mail has hit its target of automating 90% of its parcel operations following several technology investments in recent years as part of its wider modernization strategy.

These investments include the opening of two state-of-the-art, automated parcel hubs in Warrington and Daventry that can process up to 1.5 million parcels a day combined; the addition of 10 specially designed large parcel conveyors at mail centers across the country, to manage bigger parcels and three new high-speed parcel sortation machines added to mail centers in Leeds, Plymouth and Exeter, each one increasing processing by 21,000 parcels per hour.

Alistair Cochrane, Royal Mail’s chief operating officer, said, “Reaching 90% automation is a key milestone in our mission to deliver a modern, more efficient Royal Mail.

“We will continue to explore new technologies to enhance our performance and meet the evolving needs of our customers, while also supporting our workforce with cutting-edge technology.”

Further modernization
As part of its modernization plans, Royal Mail updated its app in March 2025, making it possible for customers to request proof of postage when they drop off smaller parcels and packets with a barcode at the 115,000 postboxes in the UK.

In October 2024, the operator became the first delivery company in the world to add digital tracking to its containers used for transporting letters and parcels. The tags, provided by IoT specialist Wiliot, transmit live data on location, humidity and temperature as they travel around the country.

Royal Mail automates 90% of getting parcels to offices but as far as getting them sorted to rounds it's still 0%. 4 out of 10 could do better :thumbdown

The technology does exist but it's not yet quick enough. You'd need a larger machine in each MC, locally there's probably 700+ walks across all the DOs in our area. You'd ether need to have an output for each walk or do multiple runs, starting with the walks that get the most. If it does eventually happen I think they'll have the system plan the delivery order, something on the lines of RON but a far more powerful, much scaled up version.

Thanks, I can already envision having my every working minute being dictated by a machine. Dystopian sci-fi has failed in its mission to warn the public.

How many of the Mail centres have still to have a Parcel Sorting Machine installed? and are these Mail centres on the closure list if they don’t get one installed as I guess the aim is to get the figure close to 100%.

Yet they all roll into our delivery offices mixed to the max. Large with small, tracked with non tracked, sometimes specials thrown into a random Yorke. Random mis sorts for different county’s for no apparent reason. Boots parcels exploding all over the gaff. Then we unleash whichever random packet sorters our delivery offices has that day who may vaguely know where 60% of them are supposed to go. The other 40% then get resorted around the office in a mad dash as 8.50am. Lots get left until next day as people run out the door trying to complete the ridiculous deliveries.
Its 2025 surely there is a technology that can result in a Yorke of packets coming into an office all for one delivery instead of the absolute carnage our office witnesses on a daily basis.

I guess the end=game to solve the mixed York issue would be to up the game at the parcel super hubs, I bet that with some software updates they would be able to separate all elements into separate Yorks. Then we would just need to have thousands of vehicles at our disposal to deliver millions of Yorks with a handful of items in each directly to delivery offices. Hopefully they’ll be able to accommodate a constant stream of articulated trucks with 90+ Yorks on each trailer !

The endgame would be as with all issues passed down from processing and distribution to delivery from late lorries, lack of drivers, missing sequenced, condensed and mixed yorks is for the business to recognise that this comes at a cost both financially and in quality at the delivery office and start looking at failure as a cause and effect issue rather than just label the point of failure as such.

If a mail centre is clearing but its presentation is so poor that it causes issues further down the line the mail centre is failing and that needs to be addressed.

Too many mail centre managers are obsessed with clearing but don't care how they do it.

Tracked and non-Tracked have been sorted together for a few years now. It's not worth having them done separately any more. We got ordered by someone higher up to sort them together. Any SDs that we see get yanked and sent to the SD lockers, it's not so easy to spot all SDs these days, since they stopped using the silver labels on all of them, some have it in the franking.

Direct sleeves from the hubs aren't touched by MCs, they get wheeled straight to the bay for the DO, as soon as they come off of the lorry.

Most MCs have packet sorting machines so the items don't get touched by staff, unless an item gets rejected by the machine. If it's a missort, cross out the 2D barcode otherwise the machine will sort it back to you again the next day.

We've been recently told that if a item comes to us in a sleeve it has to be treated as a small.

The worst packets for falling apart are the larger Amazon ones, sometimes they burst open the moment you try to lift them up, quite a few times the contents are way too heavy for the box.

Down on delivery, 'clearing' is an ancient tale we 'legacy' staff recount to newbies. It's not so easy when you're at the final mile of the bucket brigade. Maybe the company could arrange for MC managers to periodically rotate to delivery, assuming the mental breakdowns don't impact operations too much.

The first mistake in your statement is calling RM a "company." It's a financial business, run for year on year profits that uses it's staff as feed for the meat grinder.

Certainly all MCs and most likely all DOs have got too many managers. Typically how many managers will there be in a DO when everyone is out on delivery and you've probbaly only got someone in the callers office left in the building?

Callers office is only open for a couple of hours in the morning now. After that they are out on delivery like everybody else. Meanwhile two managers sit in the office all day looking at pointless Royal Mail; spreadsheets. That's the reality :evil/mad :evil/mad

What, your managers look at spreadsheets, ours look at tiktok, YouTube and play games like candy crush, yours are quite professional in comparison
