Residents in a Lake District town have been left angry after Royal Mail delays have led to letters arriving as many as 'nine days late'.
For several weeks now, people living in Ulverston postcode have noticed a significant reduction in their postal services.
One resident even saw their son receive cards over a week after his birthday, and claims that post is now arriving just once a week on average.
They said: "We’re getting one delivery of post a week at the moment - it’s ridiculous.
“Of course, times have changed and we now communicate in many ways so we are not as reliant on the Royal Mail as we perhaps once were.
“However, we still receive important documents through the post, some of them time sensitive in nature and a delay in receiving them of up to a week is not acceptable.
“A pile of my son’s birthday cards arrived nine days after the event, by which point the celebrations were a distant memory.
“Any claims that services are anything other than weekly simply aren’t true."
The Royal Mail suggest that recent staff shortages are the reasoning behind the 'temporary' delays, but argue that residents are receiving their mail the following day in the vast majority of cases.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “The local delivery office is currently experiencing a higher level of sick absence and vacancies which has led to temporary delays on some routes.
"However, we would reassure residents that no address is only receiving one delivery a week. In the event a route cannot be completed we prioritise it and make all deliveries the following day. This is the case for the vast majority of addresses that do not receive their items on the day they expect. We thank customers for their patience while we work to improve the service."
