Royal Mail has introduced a new automated solution at its North West Parcel Hub in Warrington, reportedly reducing the time required to unload HGV trailers from three-and-a-half hours to six minutes – a 97% improvement.

Developed by Royal Mail’s in-house engineering team, the Automatic Trailer Unloader integrates conveyor belts into trailers, creating a seamless connection to the parcel sorting systems inside the hub.

Previously, unloading loose-load trailers – each capable of holding up to 8,000 parcels – was a fully manual process.

The new system, which is said to be 30 times faster, supports Royal Mail’s growing next-day delivery operations by accelerating parcel throughput.

Neil Chaplain, engineering and process design director at Royal Mail, said: “Our new Automatic Trailer Unloader dramatically decreases the processing time for loose-load trailers by removing one of the few manual steps at our Parcel Hubs.

“There is no technology on the market that fully met our needs, so our team of engineers designed our own solution.”

The first unit is now operational in Warrington, with a second set to be installed at the Midlands Parcel Hub in Daventry.

The technology will be available to some of Royal Mail’s large account customers as part of the company’s ongoing push for automation and efficiency across its network.

Royal Mail’s North West Parcel Hub processes 800,000 parcels a day, with sorting speeds of 40,000 parcels per hour.

The addition of automated unloading is expected to significantly improve turnaround times and support growing demand for faster, more efficient parcel handling.
