A Royal Mail van has come off the A1M and ploughed into a farmer's field near Darlington.

Reports of the incident first emerged on social media at 7:30am this morning (December 14).

Remarkably, the HGV had remained upright and was spotted by motorists this morning just before the junction with the A68.

Pictures of the scene show that the lane around the lorry has been closed whilst it is recovered.

Eyewitnesses have seen recovery trucks at the scene to help the driver get the vehicle back on the road.

A number of people on social media are concerned about the driver and we have contacted the Royal Mail to find out more information.

Looked like he has nodded off and ended up in the field.

It could be one or more of several things. Mechanical issue, swerved to miss something (human, animal, object), road conditions, another vehicle cutting the lorry off, and yes: the driver could have been reaching for their phone or too tired to drive, etc. I'll assume RM lorries do not have dashcams so nothing to review? Maybe a trimble type device?
