Royal Mail has warned people in Exeter that their post could face delays over the Christmas period.
Royal Mail maintains a comprehensive air, rail, and road network to facilitate the movement of mail and parcels between its distribution hubs and processing centres throughout the UK.
The festive season marks Royal Mail's peak period, with volumes of letters and parcels typically doubling. However, the recent aftermath of Storm Darragh has led to service disruptions in certain areas of England and Wales today, with postal hubs in Exeter and Plymouth affected.
Despite these challenges, Royal Mail has confirmed that delivery and collection services will continue nationwide today, albeit with some interruptions due to off-schedule air network operations and mail centres.
In a statement, Royal Mail said: "Our air network services operated to schedule over the past 24 hours, with the following exception: Last night, technical issues cancelled a flight from East Midlands airport to Belfast airport."
The postal service also indicated that some post sent yesterday from the Midlands, southwest, northern England, Wales, and central and southern Scotland, intended for today's delivery in Northern Ireland, "may arrive later than planned", reports the Express.
Regions most affected by the network disruptions include Wales and southwest England.
Two mail centres have reported incomplete processing or dispatching of mail within the last 24 hours, which could result in delays for three specific postcodes today.
For Exeter, Royal Mail has issued a warning that some mail posted yesterday within the EX and TQ postcode areas might experience delays if it was meant to be delivered elsewhere in the UK today.
Swansea is also mentioned in the context of potential delays.
In a notice to SA postcode area residents, it has been reported that some mail dispatched yesterday from other regions of the UK, which should be delivered today, might experience delays.
Royal Mail is committed to making deliveries to every address with available post, six days a week. However, due to various local factors like high levels of staff sickness, recruitment issues or other specific local situations, sometimes this level of service temporarily can't be maintained in certain locations.
When such disruptions occur, Royal Mail endeavours to rotate delivery schedules to reduce the waiting time for each customer as much as possible. Speaking on the matter, the service commented: "We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers normally receive."
