Scotland, the postman is a drone: the first delivery of mail without humans to the Orkney Islands

LONDON – For the first time in the United Kingdom, a drone has acted as a postman. It happened in Orkney, an archipelago of 70 islands sixteen kilometers off the north coast of Scotland.

Called Orkney I-Port, the revolutionary postal service was launched by Royal Mail in partnership with drone company Skysports to deliver letters and parcels between the islands, only 20 of which are inhabited.

There is still a postie on the other end of the drone, it is replacing the use of ferry crossings, which I imagine the thinking is that ferries will be more likely cancelled in winter than a drone flight.

So the postman is still a postman/woman/viking marauder.

BBC had a video up about this. One drone has an enclosed box that looks similar size to a tray. If Orkneys deliveries are anything like ours, they'd need 8/9 drones per duty! Can't imagine them working in poor weather either so definitely just a PR stunt.
