NEIGHBOURS have told how a quick-thinking postman sprinted towards a house fire after spotting it while delivering letters.
According to eyewitnesses, the 'hero' postie sprinted down the road to put out flames that reached about 9 feet high.
Dressed in his uniform of blue shirt and shorts, he uses a fire extinguisher to tame the fire in Sycamore Road, Tolladine, before fire crews arrive.
One resident said they were in their garden when they soon became alerted to smoke billowing from their neighbour's house.
He said: "The postman was next door to our neighbour's house delivering stuff and saw the fire.
"He got the fire extinguisher out of the block of flats."
Next door to the property is a block of flats designed to provide assisted living to those with disabilities.
After getting the fire extinguisher, the postie was in action and kept the fire at bay until two fire engines arrived five minutes later.
Four metres of fencing had caught fire and began spreading to the attached house on Saturday morning (July 1).
Another eyewitness said they were alerted to heightened voices coming from outside.
She went to check if her neighbour was safe when she saw the postman running across the road.
One appreciative neighbour filmed the postman in action, saying, "Hero postman this morning fighting a fire during his round. Not all heroes wear capes."
A spokesperson said Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service commended the man for his actions but said people should always call 999.
They added: "Two HWFRS crews from Worcester Fire Station were called at 11.22am on July 1 to a fire at Sycamore Road, Worcester.
"The fire involved 4m of fencing and had spread to a lean-to attached to the property, damaging the gutter and fascia.
"The loft space and exterior fascia were checked, and the burnt timer cut away.
"A short extension ladder, small gear and a hose reel were used to extinguish the fire with a thermal imaging camera also deployed.
"There were no casualties.
"The incident was marked as pending closure at 12.30pm.
"While we would commend the actions of the postman, we would always recommend calling the fire service in such circumstances."
