Daily aircraft "imperative" to Guernsey Post

The provision of the Royal Mail’s next day services could be dropped between the UK, the Isle of Man and Jersey, but it looks like nothing will change in Guernsey.

Earlier this week Express reported on the Royal Mail proposing significant changes to the way post is moved from the UK to the Channel Islands, including potentially replacing the daily flight with a ferry service.

It said this would not immediately affect Guernsey, but further changes could be made in the future and – if a ferry service is implemented - those changes could be done “without further consultation”.

These changes will also lead to the end of next day delivery for Jersey.

Despite this, Guernsey Post is confident that the island’s online retailers – who depend on next day delivery – strengthen the case for Guernsey to retain the current system.

The CEO of Guernsey Post, Boley Smilie, said: “Royal Mail are consulting on changes to its Postal Scheme, part of which includes ending the provision of a next day service to the Crown Dependencies.

“If this change is made Royal Mail will likely cease the transportation of mail by aircraft to and from Jersey and the Isle of Man. The situation in Guernsey is different and nothing changes. The daily aircraft is imperative to our business model, and for our online retailers in Guernsey where next day delivery in the UK is essential.

“Guernsey Post and Royal Mail are in regular contact about these changes, and it has been during those discussions that we have mutually agreed the rationale for retaining the mail plane to and from Guernsey, nonetheless we will be responding formally to the consultation.”
