Royal Mail is turning neighbourhoods into 'postal deserts' as households claim they only get deliveries once a fortnight

Figures are expected to show annual delivery performance hit near-record lows
The new estimates suggest dozens of areas are affected by the postal chaos

Royal Mail is turning neighbourhoods into 'postal deserts' as they are only delivering as little as once a fortnight.

Chronic staff shortages, industrial relations and a shake-up of working practices have left households in despair wondering where their post is as post bosses struggle to contain the chaos.

The lack of letter deliveries has reaped devastation through communities as many have missed vital hospital appointments, speed or parking fines and cherished birthday wishes.

For weeks on end, families have suffered the consequences of Royal Mail disruption.

The postal service are expected to show a true insight into the disarray as they unveil figures this week showing that annual delivery performance has shrunk near-record lows, with insiders branding areas 'postal deserts', according to the Telegraph.

Resident's in Dorking, Surrey, said a 'lack of postal vans' have been to blame for the grinding halt of deliveries

The new estimates suggest dozens of areas are affected by the chaos with some households collecting bundles of late letters from sorting officers.

South-east London residents have taken to social media to expose their reality as they claimed they 'seem to only get post every two weeks'.

Others have claimed that sorting office staff told them many of their colleagues are off sick or on holiday.

Resident's in Dorking, Surrey, appear to be battling a different problem with their local post services as they said online that a 'lack of postal vans' have been to blame for the grinding halt of deliveries.

Motoring Lawyer, Nick Freeman, otherwise known as Mr Loophole explained that the disruption to the postal deliveries could allow speeding motorists to escape a fine or points on their driving license.

Laws state anyone caught speeding must receive a notice of intended prosecution (NIP) within 14 days of the alleged offence.

He advised drivers to 'keep the envelope' if and when a speeding ticket arrives as a way to challenge the allegations in court.

A spokesman for Royal Mail told the Telegraph: 'We are committed to improving our performance and accelerating Royal Mail's transformation in order to restore service levels.'

To me it’s clear. 1st class letter next day delivery at 93% is no longer achievable. This is because of fall in number of letters means that posties are going to doors with only one letter compared to triple the amount 10 years ago, it’s not profitable. Royal Mail will have to make the unpopular decision to only send first and second class post and letters out every other day. This means a change in the way posties work with one postie covering 2 walks alternate days. Get the walk size back to what they were 5 years ago, all specials and tracked 24 to go out on both walks. Guarantee a delivery of ALL first class mail within 2 days at 96%.

Many of our walks have returned to how they were 5 years ago after a disaster of a revision, 2posties cover 2 walks with only 1 to 1and a half walks going each day with all specials and parcels , so if we only had 1 postie covering 2 walks, well we all know what happens then

So you are saying many of your walks are back to the size they were 5 years ago and posties are not able to complete for one days delivery (not 2 days or more ).

Pretty much, the lapsing is now part of some walks every day but the amount of packets and large parcels make around 50 % impossible to complete. The reduction in letters that is often talked about just doesn't ring true in our office

Pretty much, we.do one walk one day the 2nd walk day after, occasionally we wont be far off but cant recall the last time we cleared everything. If like a few weeks ago when i was off there was only 1 on the paired job some days so when i got back it was piling up under the fitting .the lapsing is now part of some walks every day but the amount of packets and large parcels make around 50 % impossible to complete. The bottom line is you deliver more mail but cover less ground.

Well certainly deliver more packages and parcels but less letters as we don't have time. A while back all large parcels were put on dedicated duties but apparently this wasn't cost effective

Put 2 walks together postie only has to take out one half of all letters and parcels one day. The next day take out other half. All specials and tracked 24 need to be taken out. Reduce the walk size if needed, there will be enough spare vans and posties to adjust the walks and possibly make extra walks. Spare posties to cover sickness and holiday hopefully delivering a more consistent service.

Whenever there's just one postie on the mail just piles up creating a backlog, often only packets will go if it's just one on a paired duty, no time for letters at all. Are you advocating just one person on a paired duty?

Only stamped mail has gone down. The downstream access and mailsort is as high as ever. Staff that have have left have not been replaced for years, we must be down 50% on actual delivery hours than we were 10 years ago. Our duties are longer already and now with additional lapsing of duties added they are impossible.
Tracked Packets and parcels are all priority now . So the USO went out of the window over 5 years ago. Can not remember the last time we had a clear office.

Yes I am, but only taking out all specials and tracked 24 and half ( essentially 2 days worth) of letters and parcels. But yes get rid of all absorptions and possibly if needed reduce walk sizes back to 7 years ago. There will be spare posties and vans to take bigger parcels and cover other walks that may need to be created. Yes there is a problem because we don’t clear the office but we haven’t done that for quite a while.

So for example 100 people cover 50 paired duties at the moment. you would have 50 people covering those duties 1 on each paired duty ? 50 spare people to cover say 10 parcel jobs ,sick leave and annual leave so your have to make around 30 people redundant ?
