Popular postman Russell Craig moved to Newton Aycliffe in 1962, attended Stephenson Way Junior School, then Marlow Hall and Woodham Comprehensive.
After leaving school Russell joined Royal Mail in 1980 and, using a bike until 2001 to complete his rounds, made friends with and helped many residents as he went on his way. When cycling, and later driving, around the streets of Newton Aycliffe, Russell assisted residents with changing bulbs, assisting with flat tyres, running errands, as well as many other opportunities to assist where he could.
During the last 42 years he has served the residents of Newton Aycliffe, delivering mail in all weathers – a true servant to the town of Newton Aycliffe.
As a proud union man, Russell has been the Union Representative at Newton Aycliffe Sorting Office for CWU for the last twelve years.
Russell (aka Rusty) has four children and six grandchildren and plans to spend more time with them during his retirement as well as enjoying his hobby as a family historian.
Russell said: “The job has kept me very fit and, at 65 year old, I am still playing 5-a-side football each week.”
Kev Davies, Royal Mail Delivery Office Manager, said: “Russell has given excellent service to the town for over four decades. He has always been customer focused and he deserves his retirement. He will be missed and hard to replace.”
