BBC fans fume over Jon Kay's 'car crash' interview as Royal Mail CEO 'dodges' questions

BBC Breakfast sparked a backlash with viewers on Wednesday as Jon Kay spoke with Royal Mail CEO, Simon Thompson

Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were back on Wednesday to discuss the latest news headlines on BBC Breakfast. Throughout the programme, they spoke with a number of experts and guests including Royal Mail CEO, Simon Thompson. Speaking via video link, Jon asked Simon about the Royal Mail after workers began a fresh 48-strike in a row over pay and conditions.

Simon began: "This morning on my way in I was listening to one of our customers.

"One of our customers from a company called Biscuiteers, who said that what we are doing to provide seven-day delivery of parcels for next day delivery as well, is doing absolutely the right thing.

"But they were also very, very clear that what is currently planned in terms of industrial action up until Christmas is going to be very disruptive to their business."

Chipping in, Jon asked: "You say you're doing everything possible to avoid the worst of this strike...the CWU say that you personally didn't even turn up for the last stage of talks. Is that right?"

"Well, I think that that is not true," Simon replied as Jon interrupted: "You were at the last stage of the talks?"

The CEO insisted: "We had three weeks of talks with Acas, which I was very involved with, including over the weekend.

"And I think we have put our final offer to the CWU, we made 11 concessions based on the feedback from our team, and I am available at any time at all."

"To make sure that we can discuss the exact content of that [and] to make sure that it's understood," he added.

While Dr David Shaw wrote: "This is an utter car crash from Simon Thompson showing the very worst face of corporate greed on #BBCBreakfast support your Postie."

"And I would really encourage the CWU to pause and think about what it is they're doing to cancel this strike action."

However, fans were left fuming by the interview with some calling out the Royal Mail CEO for not answering Jon's questions.

Steve Arnold fumed: "Steve Thompson embarrassing himself on #BBCBreakfast this morning. Can't answer a simple question." (sic)

Ian Morton joked: "Well that went well. Message delivered but definitely not delivered successfully. Quite apt for the Royal Mail #BBCBreakfast."

While Dr David Shaw wrote: "This is an utter car crash from Simon Thompson showing the very worst face of corporate greed on #BBCBreakfast support your Postie."

Referencing Simon not answering Jon's questions, Erasmo tweeted: "It’s a yes or no answer mate."

"Why is @RoyalMail losing £1 million a day? Simple question #BBCBreakfast," Russ asked.

Craig raged: "Well that was a car crash interview from Royal Mail CEO Simon Thompson."
