Postman attacks firm's 'culture of bullying'
https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/mar ... -Mail.html
A postman has hit out at the 'culture of bullying' at Royal Mail after
resigning from a 32-year career with the business.
Christopher Davies accused his managers of bullying when he returned to work after taking time off in the immediate aftermath of the death of his infant grandson in 2019.
'I was very distressed watching my child hold her son as he passed away,' he told The Mail on Sunday last week. 'I've had several meetings with my managers in which they repeatedly antagonised me and shown no empathy towards the loss of my grandchild. It's disgusting how I've been treated and it comes from a culture of bullying.'
Davies, 56, who lives in Essex, resigned last week after being signed off work for seven months with stress.
Royal Mail chief executive Simon Thompson last year vowed to stamp out longstanding problems with bullying at the 500-year-old company.
Last year, a former Royal Mail manager was awarded nearly £230,000 after a tribunal said he had been subjected to harassment and discrimination at work.
A spokesman for Royal Mail said: 'We are committed to creating a working environment where all our colleagues are able to thrive, and do not tolerate any form of bullying or harassment.
'We thoroughly investigate all reported allegations of such behaviour, and then take appropriate action in each case.'

Re: Postman attacks firm's 'culture of bullying'
There's a world of difference between Chief Executive statement and the line managers on the gound floor, it would need to be translated into real action.
There are some good managers who know what they're doing, others use bullying to cover up their incompetence and the few that are just nasty managers anyway.
There's a difference between being a boss and being a leader

Re: Postman attacks firm's 'culture of bullying'
It's all just words, never action.
The CEO said he wanted to hear from people but then brushed most things they said to one side. I had a conversation with him myself but it was just a PR stunt to make it sound like he was interested in what I had to say.
All the time RM insist on impossible workloads and insufficient staff, bullying will continue to exist.
My sympathies and respect to Christopher Davies. I am a similar age and admitting (or realising) you have been bullied isnt easy to admit.

Re: Postman attacks firm's 'culture of bullying'
In general, Royal Mail managers couldn't care less about the reasons that staff give for being absent from work. I've seen members of staff be hospitalised, suffer serious accidents and even die in service... and all the managers care about is covering the jobs. It is a numbers game, nothing more, nothing less. I see staff complete 40 or 50 years' service and are allowed to just bag up and leave on their last day without thanks or ceremony. If people feel like nobody cares that transmits to performance. There is no incentive to work harder and work longer hours when you're treated like a number. The sense of community has gone from the business, the share price is all that matters to the current CEO.

It's not just my opinion, I've read hundreds of the 'have your say' surveys over the last few years and a large majority of the people say they don't feel valued or appreciated.

As the guy's now Resigned at least there's not going to be a Witch Hunt to discover who spoke to the press.
Condolences to his family. 7 months sounds a long time, but when I lost a child I didn't work for 6 months. It totally wipes you out, luckily I wasn't working for this Company at the time. No problems with the long term abscence and full support from Management, including a personal visit from Director Level and a letter of condolence from CEO. The last thing you need at a time like that is pressure from callous unsympathetic assholes.

Absolutely. My office will give you special leave for one week only even if your wife, husband or child passes away. When you require more time they offer to bring forward your outstanding annual leave. Go sick after that and no sympathy will be given upon your return, if you've gone over your absence days you'll get notice of a stage interview, guaranteed. Line managers aren't counsellors, they exist to get the mail out of the office door.Dorset Plodder wrote: ↑27 Mar 2022, 14:41As the guy's now Resigned at least there's not going to be a Witch Hunt to discover who spoke to the press.

disappointing and ultimately pointless. What a load of tosh
Why do people feel the need to comment so vacuously but then don't explain why they hold that opinion? It's very Quixotic.
