Royal Mail's postal problems on the mend, MP suggests

POSTAL problems in Stretford and Old Trafford are starting to ease, according to the area's MP.

In a post on social media on Monday, Kate Green said some of the worst affected addresses are starting to receive their deliveries on alternate days.

This is an improvement from the start of the month, when The Messenger reported some addresses were without their deliveries for several months.

In the post on social media, Ms Green – who met with Royal Mail's management alongside other Manchester MPs two weeks ago – said: "Some constituents have told me Royal Mail has now started delivering on alternate days to the streets that had been missing mail.

"Royal Mail had told me they hoped to start to do this as a minimum, until they got the service back to normal."

The MP also said she was satisfied with the response of Ofcom, the regulator responsible for Royal Mail, which warned the postal service it risks action if it fails to meet its targets.

The targets include one requirement to deliver first-class post within one working day of collection, and another to deliver second-class post within three working days of collection.

In 2020, Ofcom fined Royal Mail £1.5 million for failing to meet its targets.

A statement from Ofcom said: "Clearly, the pandemic has created significant challenges for many businesses, including Royal Mail.

"At the start of the pandemic, we recognised this was an emergency situation which meant Royal Mail could change its operations to manage the challenges it faced, without the need for formal Ofcom authorisation.

"However, we no longer consider this to be an emergency period in terms of Royal Mail’s requirements to meet its delivery targets."

Although the postal problems in Streford and Old Trafford are starting to ease, Ms Green is still planning a trip to the delivery office on Norton Street.
