A beloved postie has delivered his last letter after 35 years of service with a smile.

Crosshill village turned out to mark Jim Scobie’s retirement after the popular postman spent the last 16 years of his 35 year mail career serving their community.

Jim, 65, was blown away by the surprise celebrations when he announced his retirement and admits he was gifted enough booze “to sink a ship”.

Grandad-of-two Jim, of Maybole, said: “I’d like to thank everyone for all their generosity when I retired — I have enough alcohol to sink a ship!

Happy retirement Jim looks forward to gardening, playing golf and reading

“The best part of the job is being out in the fresh air, out and about speaking to different people.

“And checking in on a few elderly folk as sometimes you’re the only person they see.

Jim says he has around 100 books to read in his retirement

“My advice to any new postmen is to smile and speak to the customers.”

Jim started his working career helping his dad who was the local chimney sweep and slater before moving on to work at a carpet factory and then on to work for the Royal Mail.

His plans for retirement include DIY in the garden, golf, walking and lots of reading as wife Colette says he has nearly 100 books he hasn’t got round to reading yet.
