A postal worked noticed a strange smell in the bag sent by Furness after it was taken to the regional sorting office.

A drug dealer who imported cannabis from Canada was running a "pot distribution centre" in his house before he was rumbled by a postie.

Bradley Furness had been sending a number of packages to customers using a postal service and even included thank you notes.

But one postal worked noticed a strange smell in the bag sent by Furness after it was taken to the regional sorting office and shortly after, a package containing more than 4kg of cannabis was intercepted en route to Furness' home.

A police raid on his home found numerous jars containing different strains of the drug, Wales Online reports.

Georgina Buckley, prosecuting , told Swansea Crown Court that on June 5, 2017, a consignment of mail was driven from the Aberystwyth postal depot to a centre Chester.

On arrival a postman reported a strange smell coming from one of the bags and on inspection staff found 52 padded envelopes all with similar address labels.

Inside the envelopes were sealed silver packages containing cannabis along with "thank you" notes. The total weight of the cannabis recovered was 215g.

Ten days later a package from Canada was intercepted at the international mail hub in Coventry which was addressed to the same person who had sent the Aberystwyth parcels. The box was labelled as containing a speaker for an audio system but actually contained 4.5kg of cannabis.

The court heard that following these finds police executed a search warrant at 26-year-old Furness' house on September 4 and found what was described as a "pot distribution centre" in a bedroom of the property with 18 Kilner-type jars containing different strains of cannabis along with scales, envelopes, bags, and a stock of "thank you" notes.

In total more than 5kg of cannabis was seized from the house.

Officers also found the defendant had been using the PayPal system to take payments from customers as well as accessing the dark web and being involved with online cryptocurrencies.

They also uncovered documents and spreadsheets relating to dealing including the ones which showed the different costs and profit levels of selling various strains of the cannabis.

Over the following months and years Furness gave four "no comment" interviews to police.

Bradley Dylan Hugh Furness, of Brynrheidol, Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth, later admitted possession of cannabis with intent to supply, attempting to supply cannabis, and an importation offence.

Judge Huw Rees said it was clear the defendant had been running a "considerable operation" involving buying cannabis from Canada and packaging it into small quantities for onward supply in the UK – what the police had described as a "cannabis shop".

The judge said ordinarily such activity would attract immediate custody but he was mindful of the delay in the case.

He said while some of the delay could be attributed to Furness and his "prevarication" and silence in interviews some was also due to the prosecution – though arrested in September 2017 it was not until February 2020 that the defendant was charged by postal requisition.

The court heard that in the meantime Furness has started an Open University course, which was a source of great pride to his family.

Giving the defendant credit for his guilty pleas the judge sentenced him to a total of two years in prison suspended for 18 months.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Are there any other criminal activities you would condone at the risk of losing your job?

Also, it wasn't personal use, he was a dealer. I don't know of many dealers who don't use violence and intimidation and of course, they don't cause more crime in their local area by getting their clients hooked and needing to commit a crime to get their next fix. But maybe I am naive.

Plus I don't think you read the story, it was a postie on their round, it was someone at the sorting office.

I personally think at there is a case for class C drugs use to be de-criminalised, but dealers would still be committing a crime.
