Fresh Postal Strikes On The Cards

Post by PHP »

More post strikes are expected to be announced in the continuing row over pay and jobs.

The Communication Workers Union has rejected a 2.5% pay offer and warned the Royal Mail's modernisation plans would lead to the loss of 40,000 jobs.

Workers have already held two 24-hour strikes in the past few weeks as well as a number of stoppages in a separate row involving pay and the closure of Crown Post Offices and the transfer of services to WH Smith

A third walkout by Crown Post Office workers was held yesterday, and another stoppage will go ahead on Thursday, although the Royal Mail maintains only a handful of the 458 branches have been forced to close.

The Royal Mail has stressed it has to modernise to deal with increased competition, arguing that business is already being lost to rival firms.

Government ministers have so far refused to intervene in the dispute.

There's a video on the link as well.

As you'd expect from Murdoch it's very biased in favour of Royal Mail management and there's no mention of the 22 strings attached to the miserly 2.5% pay offer.

UPDATE BY THE COMMUNICATION WORKERS UNION ON THE ROYAL MAIL POSTAL DISPUTE

The Communication Workers’ Union Postal Executive have met this afternoon and have taken the decision to escalate the level of strike action due to the lack of progressive discussions with Royal Mail.

As Royal Mail have made it clear they are unwilling to engage in meaningful negotiations, the postal executive will meet this evening and tomorrow morning to plan a programme of strike action.

The dates announced tomorrow will be strategically selected in order to maximise disruption to all Royal Mail services.
