WALES’ eco minister is looking to ban junk mail as part of the Assembly’s commitment to green issues, we can reveal.
The move to boot unwanted competitions, loan offers and credit card applications off our doormats forever would rank alongside the smoking ban as another bold piece of legislation introduced here in the wake of devolution.
First Minister Rhodri Morgan has already urged Westminster to grant the Assembly powers to pass laws to keep Wales tidy. And this week Sustainability Minister Jane Davidson set out her environmental credentials by telling Wales on Sunday: “We want Wales to be a green country and we need to drive forward that agenda. At the moment the responsibility for getting rid of junk mail sits with the person who receives it.
“We might want to turn that on its head and may consider a measure that will deal with this issue. Junk mail contributes nothing to the environment.
“We may like measures to restrict delivery. The powers we have asked for from the UK government would give us the authority to take forward these kind of measures.
“We’ve got to get some strong messages over.â€

Where I live, and I expect it's a simlar story in the rest of Britain, it's not unusual to recieve three different leaflets from fast food outlets each week. On top of this TNT use delivery agents working from home and of course there is our own D2D service which is up to three per week. People get annoyed having this stuff arriving through their letterboxes every week. I doubt much of it is read. It isn't in our house. It certainly provides work for many people, but for Royal Mail to have to rely on this in order to make our money up was always dodgy ground. The inevitable backlash against unadressed mailshots and unwanted Mailsort was bound to happen. This is why there was a national outcry when some out of touch with public opinion manager decided to discipline Roger Annis.

I always keep a few spare and stick them in those pre-paid envelopes you get from banks when they ask if you want a loan/credit card.IWW Fellow Worker wrote:Where I live, and I expect it's a simlar story in the rest of Britain, it's not unusual to recieve three different leaflets from fast food outlets each week. What about all the shite you get falling out of papers, supplements, mags, for just about anything? Everyweek in MCN theres somthing for a bank loan or credit card, or bike dealer - what about Saturday papers? My parents used to buy the Telegraph on Saturdays ( tmk, still do ), all I'd read was the motoring, but you had travel, food, magazine, news, sport.....and then there are the SundaysIWW Fellow Worker wrote:Where I live, and I expect it's a simlar story in the rest of Britain, it's not unusual to recieve three different leaflets from fast food outlets each week.
