Red-faced postman beats off TV muggers with postbag
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/a ... ge_id=1770
A postman tried to prevent a mugging using his bag of letters to batter two thieves - only to discover they were filming a TV show.
Neil Filer, 40, was mid way through his round when he came across two large men with balaclavas pinning a terrified woman against a wall and screaming abuse in broad daylight.
Despite them holding baseball bats, the dad-of-two dashed to her aid walloping one of the thugs away with his heavy post bag while desperatly trying to free the woman.
But as he was about to call for help several shocked camera crew jumped from doorways and parked vans to restrain him.
The production team from BBC hospital drama Casualty were discreetly shooting a dramatic episode in Hotwells, Bristol, when they spotted the postie running at the actors.
Mr Filer made the mistake as the camera crew and catering vans were out of sight, and he soon saw the funny side.
He said: "I'm not that brave so when I saw the attack, I was hoping a car was going to stop.
"When no one did I put my bag down, ran up to the men and whacked one of them on the back of the head with my pouch and he stumbled forward.
"I was about to run off when someone shouted: 'What are you doing? We're filming for Casualty'. All the actors started laughing.
"I was still shaking and was in shock when they told me it wasn't real, then I started laughing too. I just carried on my round."
The scene, shot last Bank holiday weekend, featured a pharmacist trying to protect his wife from the attackers, who were holding baseball bats. It is due to be aired in September.
Mr Filer, from Bedminster, Bristol, has more than 24 years' service with the Royal Mail and the firm praised his bravery.
A spokesman said: "His actions were extremely brave and were in the finest traditions of public service. Naturally he is a little bashful about the whole thing now."
Mr Filer's 17-year-old daughter May said she had a good chuckle about the incident but was still very proud of her dad.
She said: "When he was telling me, at first I thought he was brave, but then when he said they were actually filming for Casualty I couldn't stop laughing."
A Casualty spokeswoman said the actor wasn't hurt during the unexpected interruption.

Of course the lad most likely saw two marked bandits robbing an old girl and assumed it was that other pair of thieving criminals, the infamous 'Leighton and Crozier' gang.
