`I was in the room with Crozier when it dawned on him to make management redundant before attacking posties again.
Giving a manager redundancy saves the company at least 1.5 the salary of a postie. It is much easier to remove managerial posititons. I spent long enough doing it! `

Now, thats a statement I would enjoy showing my DOM.

re: Not operational management

Post by F0zziebear »

Hold on!

There are different types of management - Ops Mgmt and non-ops mgmt. Ops mgmt are generally seen as a no go area for redundancy as they cut them down in 2002 under the now compete project. It was recognised that you couldn't cut many more of the direct ops mgmt out otherwise the span of control would be too great.

I am referring to people in marketing, sales, legal, HR, Finance, Engineering, IT. You would not believe how many people were out there in non-ops roles. Its a bit like the NHS. In fact it was a lot like it. We stripped out plenty of roles and made more savings that the entire Single Daily Delivery project. We removed 3,000 managerial roles! SDD/Mail Centre Review and Transport Review removed about 30,000 roles!

I wish Royal Mail was better at communicating what goes on across the business, but hey!

Hi Fozz, thats interesting. My Point was, that in the main most of the DOMS I have come across would not last too long in the `Real Business World` compared to Royal Mail. Most have no idea how to manage `People` but the very word `Manager` means man/women management? Most of the DOM`s (& Line Managers) that I have encountered seem to have only one skill (B&H). Was it W. Curchill ? who said `there are no bad Soldiers just bad Commanders?

FOzz joining a union!!

:funneh Ok FOzz this aint monster.co.uk

Anyways bit confused which aint hard, can you just confirm summin.

Print houses aint gonna change their bits so we wont have the,we'll do this bit and RM do that bit of the work they collect or a company pushes out.
But you say TNT could start delivering E2E because they've got enough work.

Actually just answer one question as i've read through the thread a few times.

When, seeing as you know both sides do you think that our competitors will be delivering mail.
At the end of the day,if they're delivering half of what we're delivering now in certain areas we'll be in serious trouble.
You must have a rough idea of a time limit.
Lets be honest £100M to TNT is nothing if it can start E2E up.
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

re: Quick reply

I am away for a few days (joined MI5) so this will have to be quick.

Print houses will change over if a large contract is awarded to a competitor. The problem arises when you start putting in IT systems in the print house so that you can offer a better service. It means that if you only took the mail that went to urban areas it would cause problems and extra cost to do a print run twice as you will be putting different information, indicia's etc... on the envelope.

TNT & DHL do have the financial backing to be able to do E2E. I don't want to put a date on when they will start as it depends on internal issues at both companies and such information is probably commercially sensitive. However, I would hazard a guess that within 2 years (if they are starting now) you will start to see them deliverying. You won't feel the pinch for probably another 5 years after that. You can't rush setting up deliveries. You have to maintain quality of service levels and get the model right for the UK.

The reason why they will have to enter E2E is because at the moment they are competing on price. These margins are already tiny per item. The only way they will be able to make serious money in the UK is by offering new/different products and deliverying them for far less than 13.5p.

It;'s not easy to explain all of this without diagrams, but you'll have to trust me
