Ofcom investigates Royal Mail after it misses delivery targets again

Rather than investigating RM the regulator should just say “we’re sick of this happening year on year, we won’t even look at USO reform until you you can prove that you’re capable of delivering a simple service let alone one that is complicated by less staff, less knowledgeable staff, rotational deliveries etc etc”. Unfortunately they won’t as the Senior Management, Union boys & the regulator are all scratching each others back to smooth a path enabling them all to make something out of it!!!!!

I've just got around to looking at the figures on the IDS website.
The manager's figures for 'percentage of delivery routes completed daily' are 87.8%. That's 11.3% above the independently measured first class figure of 76.5%.
I've heard that part of the manager's bonus is linked to how clear the office is each day in which case this indicates fraud countrywide. And it's been like this for years.
I won't name names but I've been told by managers about a few offices locally where it's known they falsify these figures. Our office claims they don't lie but they do the figures in the morning after telling everyone to take everything out even when it's obvious they're not gonna complete. They're not there seeing or recording what comes back undelivered each day.
And of course the inefficiencies of having to prep the undelivered mail again the following day don't matter as long as the managers get their bonus.
A fella I know did the figures for his office for months, he isn't a manager so didn't lie. That office was on the official struggling list every day. In the end they took him off it and got a manager to do the figures - I haven't seen the office appear on the list since.
If only Ofcom had the resources to do random checks, mind you, surely Kretinsky will be aware of this and look to cut out those extra costs. I wonder if I can find an email address for him...

OFCOM is the only regulator putting profit before legislation. Our politicians keep allowing this to happen. The ORR would never demand that every train that did not make a profit was scrapped. It's even more outrageous when you see that the railway industry is basically kept alive with taxpayers money. Yet postal workers are told they are a drain on profits and their jobs can go in the bin. OFCOM should be disbanded and the industry returned to the public.

Fully agree, I've said for years Ofcom are acting like a paid advisor/advocate not a regulator.

I think we all agree it is company policy to deliver tracked over mail yet Ofcom say it's not.

The illusion of truth. If you keep telling a lie long enough it becomes truth. How long have RM been prioritising tracked over parcels and live mail? Pretty much since our walks started getting more than 5 or 10 a day, which was well over a decade ago now. The CWU know this, Ofcom know this, every single RM employee knows this.

When delivery failures were far less rampant than they are now (ie, pre-2020) union reps were authorised to take photos of failed frames and report it up to Area. That they don't do it now (aside from the fact they'd be taking so many photos they'd rival PCOD), I can only assume because the union has been completely cowed by the company.

Something Martin said a while back that I let slide: Ofcom is indeed the 'independent regulator' - but the independent part relates to the government, not its relationship with any of the entities it is supposed to regulate. There were one too many incidents (e.g., The Zircon Affair) in the late 80s when the Thatcher government spiked some BBC documentaries on national security grounds and it was felt to be intolerable for the government to be directly interfering in the operation of the free press, thus Ofcom was established.
