Leaked Personal Information Online...?

So, I was recently informed by my Line Manager on the telephone that some of my details had been leaked on the "Dark Web" / internet by Russian Hackers.

If you haven't heard or guessed already, I work at an International office being held ransom by Hackers. Everything is basically locked electronically.

My Line Manager told me not to worry about it all and seemed to brush off the whole situation as nothing.

Apparently I have personal details online now including details about my personal health and medical conditions.

I told my Line Manager I wasn't very happy about this but he offered very little comfort or resolve.

I am one of 200 hundred who this has apparently happened to.

What I would like to know is, where do I legally stand?

Should I pursue a claim based on the company's negligence and lack of online protection? Will it be worthwhile? Or am I putting my job at risk by doing so? For what might only be a few thousand pounds in compensation.....

It's all a bit of a Head F*@k Tbh.

How do you know it was your employer that handles your data responsible for your data appearing on the Dark Web?

Why would your line manager even tell you, as it will admit, corporate liability?

Unless you have something in writing almost impossible to link your employer with any Data Breach

My McAfee anti virus software told me my details were on there. That being a password for my email account, I changed two years previously.

Lockbit owned up to it and released some of the information as part of the ransom process. As far as I know, RM has refused to pay the ransom and now lock bit is leaking the information.

Also, Royal Mail should know what information was hacked and have a responsibility to advise anyone affected.

As Royal Mail firstly failed to keep your information securely, and then failed to pay to prevent that information being published following their initial failure, I hope that the union and their solicitors would be all over this like a rash.

What a despicable way for a business to treat their employees' data.

I'm sorry this has happened to you, Royal mail incompetence not only destroys jobs and work life balance but peoples lives as well.
A friend of mine had his identity stolen, it destroyed 3 years of his life trying to sort it out. New NI NUMBER, New tax number, bank problems, national insurance contributions, driving licence problems etc etc.
WATCH EVERYTHING: bank accounts, property ownership, inform your banks that your identity may have been compromised and you would like extra security checks enforced. 2FA everything you can. Check your Credit rating every week. Be vigilant.

Arnold Clark had an attack in December 2022, they set up a dedicated call centre to help those affected and providing regular updates on its website. They also offered affected customers 24 months fraud/credit protection with Experian free of charge. There are lawyers lining up to take cases against the company.

When you consider how despicably they treat they're employees generally, it comes as no surprise that our data should be treated similarly.
