Being moved from duty (what are rules?)

Post by norris9 »

If you are signed to a duty, but a manager wants to move you to another duty for the day, can they do that? or do the circumstances matter....

I'll give an example....

Say a job hasn't gone out for 2 days, but the job you are signed to is up to date with just today's mail + parcels. A manager asks you to move onto the round with 2 days mail + parcels. Do you have to move?

If yes - I'd also add in - what if there are reserves who have not been moved even though they only have 1 day's mail on the round they have been put on. Shouldn't a reserve be moved before a duty holder is asked to move?

It used to be they could move you from your duty for operational reasons, however they weren't supposed to cover your duty with some else

What's this if a duty hasn't gone out for two days? I thought we had to treat everything equally these days :left:

Joking aside you'd have to do as instructed however unfair it is but that doesn't mean you have to give it your absolute superhero best going above and beyond the call of duty effort to clear it, I think if it were me I'd be trying for the slowest, shittest postie in the office award and not complete it, oh will the ultimate insult be back on your own duty tomorrow but that hasn't gone out today.

It’s so typically illogical to move someone to a duty with 2 days mail, and then return them to their own duty the following day, which will now have 2 days mail!!

This is peak genius.

Shouldn't they be moving a reserve before moving a duty holder? surely they should be moving a reserve!

Some reserves at our office don't get moved, they get given a round and stay on it as if they were signed to it, but people who are actually signed to a duty get moved. It's ridiculous.

Same here well sort of, senior guy retires, really decent duty, but all of a sudden it's now part time so new starter gets put on it whilst another 30 year postie gets their duty "lapsed/absorbed" and f***ing shafted to being a reserve unless they drop to part time to take aforementioned duty. c***s ruining this job

It's not about the 2 days mail and finish time....I will finish on time as I always do.....

my concern is that management are moving duty holders instead of reserves when there is no reason not to move a reserve.

on top of this I seem to always be the duty holder that gets moved to cover another round....it's rare anyone else gets moved.

Its Royal Mail, you arnt expecting things to make sense are you :Very Happy here we had a very good service and business that's being systematically destroyed , for what? Some short term millions for a few people? People say that the top brass dont want letters and just want us to be another Evri, maybe, but I'm sure it would have been much less hassle to start another Evri from scratch? What's happening makes no sense to me at all.all these mad decisions at local level just prove the stupidity :arrrghhh

Honestly, posties seem to have more common sense and logical thinking than any part of Royal Mail management, but they simply do not listen to us.

The ideas that Doms and line managers have come up with in the years I have been at Royal Mail are baffling, some straight out moronic.

Because they've never been a postman or they've never done a round in the office, they simply do not understand how things work and how rounds differ. They assume everything is the same.

The revision process is bonkers. A few posties that have done a lot of the rounds will know what rounds are too big or too small and could easily work out how to even things up rather than getting 1 or 2 planners in with a laptop marking hundreds of walks up on some software.

Royal Mail should be pushing the government and ofcom to enforce the public to change their letterboxes so they are designed for purpose. This would save time on delivery and reduce injuries. We should not have to deliver to low letterboxes - they are a health hazard. Anyone with one of those small A6 sized postboxes should have an A4 sized wall postbox. Why is nothing done about all of this. Knocking on doors to hand people birthday/xmas cards or 'do not bend' items is ridiculous. 32 million addresses - probably 3 million of them have letterboxes that aren't fit for purpose.

Royal Mail could also sell and install parcel boxes or form a partnership with a company who does this. The easier it is to deliver the quicker we can deliver.

Yeah, it really should be a pretty straightforward business. Massive infrastructure, great work force, mainly! What could go wrong? :nana

This is the problem some posties are feeding the management information, they think they can manage, there is at least one in every office, let the management manage & just turn up & go home, you'll be dead before you know it & it will be all over :wave

Mostly i see the more recent entrants and the 5-10 agency that get shafted, very rarely see a duty holder get pushed around - maybe we are just lucky. We have a few who dont like staying on the same duty, so theyre not worried. Wouldnt like it myself tbh 😈
