Notice of retirement...

I handed in my my notice of retirement at the beginning on March, giving a whole month’s notice instead of a just a week to be helpful! I gave the DOM a letter and also sent a copy to HR. However, I have had no acknowledgement at all, and I think that’s a bit odd, never mind being just bad mannered!

Have other people any idea what happens after you hand in your notice? Should I get a letter from HR? My last day’s next week...

Are you saying you were expecting a letter acknowledging that you’re leaving the business. Or are you saying you’re planning on retiring and haven’t been contacted with regards to receiving your pension?

I was expecting a letter acknowledging my letter (pension stuff comes later, after I leave, i understand). Letter sent to HR three weeks ago...

I'm not sure whether HR are really bothered - it's giving your notice to your DOM that's more important.

The pension service centre should contact you when you're within 3-4 months of normal retirement age, giving you your options, whether you're still employed by RM or not. If you want to take it at any other time, you have to contact them. So if you're retiring and want to draw your pension shortly after you leave, then you should have put the wheels in motion before now!

Thanks for your reply. As I say, I’m not concerned about the pension aspect, just that HR don’t seem bothered about me leaving...I just hope the manager has done what he needs to do (I don’t see him often - he’s not there very much!)

Why would HR be bothered? This is RM and you’re just a number! But maybe you could phone up and ask them if they know you’re leaving.

Or is there anybody else you can ask at your office – line manager, etc.

Well I shall be retiring within the next month but have yet to hand in my formal notice to quit. I shall wait until I know the resolution of the CWU ballot (end of this month) before deciding the actual date - I won't be inclined to give them a full month's notice. If the vote is 'Yes' to accept, my leaving date will be as soon as I get any backpay. If 'No' then I may just pull the plug sooner rather than waiting a month or two. But in any case notice will be unlikely to be much more than 1 week. My DOM knows I will be going soon although not the date!

It annoys me when this happens.

Royal Mail uses the term "Our Term" in so many situations, for instance.

1. When they want something.
2. When they are baling us in news items.
3. When they treat us like 11 years olds in WTL.
4. When they want us to feel we are an asset, but really we are a resource.

Its made more obvious when something like this happens that "Our People" is just a throwaway statement that means sweet FA.

Never mind changing the culture of management. they have to change the culture of the whole business.

I dont blame you,why should you show a firm any loyalty when they treat their employees so badly!

Did you get paid the week you worked priority retirement ?
Royal Mail is saying my husband isn't due a wage for that week
Surely his final weeks wage would have monies holidays owed etc ?
Obviously can't check online as that was stopped from the day he finished and speaking to someone is near impossible

Hmmm, they should be able to explain this, we are paid for the week we work rather than a week in hand, so he should be due that, unless he's taken too much leave, leave entitlement is reduced if you don't complete the leave year.

Don’t expect anything from this company, I did the same as yourself gave them a month’s notice even though I only needed to give a week. Absolutely no response from HR or Dom. After approximately 28yrs I suppose I expected a thank you at least….. no chance, my last day was a day I was owed for a previous bank holiday. They docked me the days pay & put me on an emergency tax code so was hit heavily by tax on my last pay packet. I hopefully expect to get a refund this April.
The only thing I enjoy with regards this sh1thole of a company is this forum. It makes you feel lucky to have escaped

There is no retirement age now, so as far as RM are concerned you are simply leaving the business.

Make sure you screenshot your annual leave on the app as the minute the DOM presses the button to say you have left all access will be removed.

Don't expect acknowledgement, you are simply a number. If you are old school contract those up above will be rubbing their hands in glee at another one going.

THAT, is the reality.

We had a postie who had done 27 years, he verbally gave his notice & Dom said no problem you can go now, no questions asked
