Who Pays The CWU officials?

Post by Senior Service »

Reading a topic elsewhere in this forum about possible VR for Billy Hayes it made me realise that I do not know who pays the wages of the CWU -

Unit Rep and Unit Health and Safety - I am sure they are still employed by RM and perhaps paid expenses and given some facility time

Area Health and Safety and Deputy Health and Safety - I have no idea

Area Rep - Again I have no idea

What I am getting at is to what extent is it in their own interests not to rock the boat too much because if they are not re-elected will they have to re-join the great unwashed again and would rather keep Royal Mail on their side for an easier life. So would they avoid some confrontations and pay lip service to some issues to avoid a lot of extra work for themselves and antagonise management?

These are just questions that have been going around in my mind bought upon by occasions when the Union have at times been missing from our unit during some awkward times.

Unit Reps and Area Reps are unpaid. They just get their wages from Royal Mail. If anyone thinks that they do the job for an easy life should try it. The Unit Reps and Area Reps have the hardest jobs in the union. They get the most grief and the least recognition. Most of them do the job because they believe in it and want to represent their colleagues. Easy to belittle them on this forum but I challenge anyone that thinks the overwhelming majority of CWU front line reps don't get grief, should try sticking their cowardly heads above the parapet and have a go themselves.

We had one poster on here, they got banned for something else, who complained that his rep was a brown noser and was always in the DOMs office talking about work. Moaned that the meeting were held after work, and then complained that the rep wouldn't help him when the manager insisted that he worked to his time even when he came in early every day.

We advised him to take on the reps job if he could do beter, never heard if he did.

Some do, some don't.
It depends what they put into it.

It's just as silly to try to paint every rep as an angel as it is to call every one useless. As a union we should welcome criticism, understand it and challenge it if necessary but we should never discourage it because that just creates a hiding place for poor reps. I've met many really good reps in my time with the union but i've also seen my fair share of useless tossers looking for a free ride. I don't think we should be protecting these guys, It weakens the whole union.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

All of the above. Just out of interest, with HMRC crawling all over expenses at the moment, the CWU must be saving a fortune compared to what they used to pay out. Is there any reason unit reps can't be paid a small sum for doing the job? May at least attract people of a higher calibre, and reduce the number doing it just cos no one else wants to.

Let's not forget the Divisional reps on £30 000.

I think the unit reps should get more recognition. Maybe a small payment from the union branch they come from. You won't get anything from the union head office. All our money there gets spent on massive salaries to the top boys. They get money for not taking their holidays as well. Also been told that whoever loses the coming election for the top Job will get a massive pay off. I heard hundreds of thousands. We should give the money to the unit reps and area reps instead. After all is our money.

Is that really true? It can't be right. Who authorises it? Surely they can't just write out a cheque to pay themselves for this stuff? Don't we have someone at head office who is supposed to look after the unions money on our behalf?

Yes,the details are on that forum that belittles reps.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Don't rock the boat with the CWU, you will be a target for both. Corruption at the highest level and failing in all directions of welfare health and safety plus fail to uphold agreements. Not All union reps are the same.
