Ref: 40000
Date: 31st January 2007

To: Branches with POSTAL Members

Postal Divisional Representatives

Dear Colleague

Road Transport Directive/Industrial Action Ballot

We can advise Branches that the Postal Executive have endorsed a recommendation to serve notice and ballot the drivers affected by the Road Transport Directive for industrial action.

Despite continuing negotiations with Royal Mail over the weekend and all day Monday 29th January 2007, we were still unable to secure a settlement that the Postal Executive could recommend to the membership. We had made it clear to the business that unless progress was made and an agreement reached by close of play Monday, the Union would have no alternative but to enact the Conference Policy to ballot for industrial action.

We have advised the business that we still remain committed to concluding an agreement and are available for negotiations to achieve this aim.

We have not taken this decision lightly. However, given the pending legislation in April and Royal Mail's insistence that they will be recruiting an army of agency drivers, we have no alternative other than to defend our members.

Communications will be sent from CWU Headquarters to the drivers affected, explaining what we have achieved so far in negotiations, what the outstanding issues are and why it is essential they support the Union. A brief is also being prepared to assist representatives and Postal Executive Council members will be available to attend membership meetings on request. This will be co-ordinated by Pat O'Hara PEC Chair on 0208 971 7303 or jdunn@cwu.org.

Branches must ensure that until a National Agreement has been reached no negotiations should take place at Local Level in line with previous instructions. Further reports on progress will be circulated as appropriate in the normal way.

The ballot timetable is as follows:

· Ballot papers dispatched Wednesday 7th February 2007

· Ballot closes Wednesday 28th February 2007

Any general enquiries regarding the content of this LTB should be addressed to the Deputy General Secretary (Postal) with specific enquiries on the Road Transport Directive going to the appropriate occupational officers.

Yours sincerely

Got THIS in my Google alerts.
Should be interesting if the strike goes ahead, could turn into a bit of a mess.
If they use 'other' drivers the whole place will stop.
Could we just see us delivering mail brought in from TNT and the like during all this!!!

Cancelled for the time being, more talks are happening.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

rumours flying around the goverment will give leighton his phantomshare scheme and that will be his parting shot, which seems to fit in with him being wanted for negotiations over the proposed takeover of sainsbury's.

A legal challenge has halted a strike ballot among 10,000 HGV drivers working across Britain for Royal Mail.

Managers had raised questions about the vote even before it began – but also offered talks over the dispute.

Royal Mail has threatened to recruit an army of agency drivers if the present workforce won’t accept the deal on offer.
