geo route & pegasus?

what are you guys talking about when you mention geo route & pegasus in your posts/thread?

Its a computer program that was designed in a foreign country to simulate a postal worker on their route. In fairness its a useful tool if applied correctly and with workers input in can be used to equalise rounds and make sure that they are all as fair as it is possible to make them.

Unfortunately, Royal Mail local managers seem to use them as an hours saving tool and very few rounds become smaller, in fact most become larger and the average walk seems to top 4 hours instead of the agreed maximum of 3.5hrs.

BTW don't believe the propaganda that the average speed on Pegasus is set at 2.1 mph. Royal Mail say that this is the average speed of posties on their walks, but it isn't unless you never stop walking. To reach this nirvana of average speed you have to not stop to open gates, not stop to post mail through letterboxes, not stop at attendance calls, not stop when refilling your pouch and not have toilet breaks. It is a fact that when you included all these necessary stops (which you can in the program) that the average speed, and the 2 set speeds in the system, come out at 3.8mph and 4.0mph, strange that eh.

Plus--all paths to the door are measured ,and if too long Posties do not deliver+ they are better paid.

The origins of geo-route are it was a system for the delivery of bin bags........and adapted by royal fail thats why parameters set are to enable them to save money by getting those that run arround ,come in early to take on board extra work (and still they do it).................... and therfore by default is a 'rubbish ' system anyway

But the road network maintenance part of A Plus/Pegasus/DORIS (whatever it's bloomin called) puts the DP in the middle of the property. When they connect the dot of the DP up to the nearest path or road (which isn't just done in a straight line) it should take into account the time for any gates etc because you're not walking to the centre (indoors) of their house to deliver their mail. Did that make sense because it did in my head and I'm not sure if it will make any sense unless you've seen it done...

However, I still think it's a bit pants. My old round was so pants that the guy who used to cover my 1 in 6 used to book the week off so he didn't have to do it. Even those that haven't got stumpy legs like me can't do it any faster than 3 hours on a quiet day. Hmph.

Hello everyone. Given the recent largely negative publicity concerning the implementation of the 'Pegasus Geo' system, I'm just wondering how long the Royal Mail has been using it for? Is it at the localised pilot stage or is somekind of national roll out planned or currently being implemented? Also, given what appear to be the many problems that appear to be occurring because of it, large mail backlogs etc are plans in place to ammend the software based on staff concerns? And what systems were in place before 'Pegasus Geo' was introduced - did staff use street maps on their rounds to plan their routes, for example?

you're right...am a rep in the PCS union and am interested, based on all the publicity over the system as to how such an evidently problematic system could be introduced in the first place...hence all my questions...so apologies for being so detailed...

Ok fair do's,we're a bit paranoid on here,well i am anyway.
There's loads of info on the stuff you want on here.But the crux of it all is the abuse by royal mail using the wrong figures in the system to get as many job cuts out as they can,but what happens is usually the rounds are too big and we fail to finish.

Throwing this one in - when RM introduce the performance app onto the PDA - hopefully the cwu will remeasure every walk, seeing as the times of walks have mysteriously disappeared. Our last paired walk was 4 hr 20, increased to 5 hr 20 - (re timed) now adding 4-500 extra drop points. Least we could say the planner says this is 5 or 6 hours long, guess RM don't want to hear that.

where did you find times of the walks?

The previous revision had all ours timed around 4hr 20 - with estimated departure times etc - they've now disappeared surprisingly. Guess the Pegasus/Geo could still do them, we did ours with the planner- going round with a little green man. RM could say walks take 3 hours and I say 5 hours - without evidence, it's just an opinion or guesswork.
