My contract says I can be sent to another office. Wouldn't I then be insured if I drove to that office? And I often do go to other offices and have been told I can claim milage but never have bothered as it's pennies per mile.

SDP+C Car insurance usually covers you to commute to your usual place of work. Not to wherever the heck the company wants to send you on a day by day basis. That'd fall under using the vehicle for business use.

Best bet is to tell the manager that you'll need a van and use the RM fuel and insurance.

I thought I'd read that RM were using some new starts as a pool of labour and just sent wherever needed?

Yeah it's 55p a mile you can claim if self employed. Not sure how it'll work for PAYE.
I cycle to work so they never ask as they know they'll have to give me a vsn which then means they'll be 1 short for a dpr driver

For post 22 contracts there's a mobility clause in the contract of employment. However workers report an inconsistent approach to that clause. Sometimes arrangements are put in place such as the provision of a vehicle to facilitate travel to another workplace. Ultimately the contract says the employee is liable to work at whichever location the employer requires. If you need insurance for your own vehicle to use it for business use you will need to ensure you are insured.

The contract does not say there is a liability to have a vehicle to drive to work. So workers who commute to their workplace by other means could well be offered a vehicle. They may also be told to commute by other means to another workplace. The approach is inconsistent.

I was only ever sent to another office once and I told my manager I needed taking there and dropping back off at my normal start and finish times. That lasted for one day and never happened again.

We work in a cluster of three offices and it’s costing the new starters a fortune in petrol when they’re sent to the furthest office about 15 miles away but there is a doubt as to whether they’re entitled to it

They have to mate otherwise the base office will be short of vans
