Bag weights how can new way of working support it
Royal Mail “Safe System of Work” sheet for manual handling. The key part for delivery bags is this:
Delivery pouch/bag maximum: 16 kg
Reduced to 11 kg after first pouch
8 kg on hills and for shared van deliveries
5 kg on steep hills or stairs
The bag weights are over this when double mail , how can new way of working support it? Every round should come with a trolley and if using one then it will slow u down

Obviously, the workload has to reduce materially and more trolleys are needed or the SSP limits will continue being breached in practice.
Trolleys may reduce strain but they also reduce speed and flexibility so if RM assumes the same productivity while also expecting safer manual handling then the maths might not stack up....The CWU have said that the DM26 is safer than ODM because it introduces support duties, more resource and local review mechanisms

Always use a trolley once your back goes the company won't care ive had this numerous times back problems due to oversized bags and punished for it with stages. I will never not use a trolley now yeah its slower but that's the not your problem its there's health and safety first. Once you get in the stage loop its had to get out of it.

Split up the round more. Make the loops smaller.

If you're meant to use a trolley then use it. if you don't and you get injured, it'll be a straight blameworthy.Playmail wrote: ↑12 May 2026, 06:59Always use a trolley once your back goes the company won't care ive had this numerous times back problems due to oversized bags and punished for it with stages. If people are currently carrying 3-4 bundles of mail in a bag, then i can understand the concern of them becoming 5-6-8 bundles.
Fact is, you shouldn't be carrying the 3-4 bundles in the first place. At the very least split them right down.

Trolleys were supposed to be mandatory with the introduction of van share.
The weight was supposed to come off our backs.
If people are still carrying heavy bags that is down to them and nobody else.
And a trolley doesn't slow you down.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Sure I’m not on my own but I find it harder to push a trolley than carrying a bag, to keep stopping & cocking the handle to push plays havoc on my lower back, especially when you have 4/5 days of mail 🥹

Aren't LWT primarily designed to be pulled rather than pushed?

Re: Bag weights how can new way of working support it
My first reaction to that is, where the hell are the packets? If you have space in your bag for three bundles like it's 2006 then that surely displaces all the packets, of which there are 300% more than back then.
Secondly, how can someone have that many bundles in this era? Surely that's not a loop, because with the decline in callrates that would have been ten bundles when P&L was introduced. That's more like an entire duty.
This cannot be standard working. What it sounds like is people are clearing multiple days of rollovers with a support driver covering the packets. Yet instead of having the driver run bags to them, they're just loading it all into one bag like before pouch boxes were invented
The machine stops.

Pull it, push it - whatever feels comfortable.postslippete wrote: ↑12 May 2026, 16:45

But I have never needed to keep stopping to cock the handle.
I don't even know what that means or why you would do it.
