Re: £980m
Its obviously a headline "cost estimate" figure to show that both RM and the CWU have given us a massive deal
Its not a simple measure of the extra wages that has been paid out and will almost certainly include assumptions and secondary costs that have massively inflated that number substantially.
Take what the CWU say with a pinch of salt

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Re: £980m
The jobs market is absolutely brutal right now with absolutely no signs of it improving. Infact, it's said things are going to get a whole lot worse as employers start to tighten their belts some more whilst making layoffs.
100's if not 1000's of applicants for each minimum wage job, and the job normally goes to a very good friend or relative. There's hordes of people of all ages who've been unemployed for well over a year, and each passing month is just a nail in the coffin.
Grim times ahead folks.

too broadly say it’s a good or a bad job
Its up too each person to decide what level they’re at and how they feel it’s no one cap fits all
For me 55 year old in full rural delivery office
32 years in the game
Walks to work 10 mins
In an area of the country with limited good jobs nearby
I’m not rushing to get out
Will take a watching brief for now
But I get for a new start maybe passing through it seems crap
Be same for processing and distribution I guess

Re: £980m
i make you right. At 61 and in a similar position to you I will be content to carry on a little while longer. Im on a HCT and dont drive for RM and have no intention of doing so. id happily take a years money to leave as the physical side of the job is hard for me, and under this new model looks like getting even worse.
The job has served me well, however there is no way would I recommend this job to people now.

When anyone asks me about a job I’m quick to point out it ain’t the job it was
But ask enough people about their jobs they will all say it ain’t what it once was
and as previously mentioned by other posters it’s a brutal jobs market out their

Re: £980m
Even at minimum wage, a lot of these jobs offer more hours and less weekend work. When they are only making 5 people per office up to full time, you will soon be earning more than the 30 hour contract without all of the crap that comes with being on delivery.

The job has served me well, however there is no way would I recommend this job to people now... I’m in early 50’s over 30 years service,so used to prepping and delivering same duty daily, having to liase and team up with the 2 people in this 3 into 4 model won’t be easy for me,as I struggle with mental health, actually really anxious and worried about what lies ahead

Im totally with you on all this, and generally its what i do. RM pay me for my 8 hours or whatever and im lucky to be in a position where i would be reasonably happy to just leave the job if i wanted to, so its hard for management to stress me out. Some posties do struggle with different aspects of the job and find change or any sort of confrontation difficult. The impact the changes and uncertainty have on these people is not something to take lightly and they are often really conscientious workers, that managers can manipulate. They get no backup from most other postman either, who can be worse than the managers in the bitching stakes!
