Managers/ Failed posties

When I started RM, over 4 years ago, I would see comments on here regularly that managers are just failed posties. I didn't really understand back then just how much truth there was to that, as our DO had several managers, and the only one who had ever been a postie was apparently really good at it (the rest were just management types that had come from other, mostly unrelated businesses.)

Now I've experienced...
The guy who flipped a van whilst drunk and was promoted to manager for (I imagine) his own safety
The woman who repeatedly delivered entire loops of letters to the wrong streets and became a manager
The other woman who was really good at being a postie, but deliberately copied the woman above so her application for management would be accepted (successfully)
The guy who got into 3 fist fights with customers in 3 DOs and came back from his suspension as a manager
The guy that received so many complaints for his lecherous behaviour towards women in the streets that he was told he could either leave or get promoted
The woman who went out on delivery during a heatwave wearing a coat and passed out.

So this post is just a place for you to vent about the worst posties you've seen that got rewarded with double pay and a nice sit down every day

We had one who became a manager,regulaly off sick ,failed to deliver numerous times and the best excuse for not turning up was he got locked in his bedroom

There was the manager from Hailsham? who was arrested at a birthday party for assaulting his partner.

The manager who slapped a female employee on the bum. Was warned, in a meeting with DOM, area manager and union rep to never ever do that again. Did it to another female employee a few months later.

Transferred to a different office.

Only at RM.

Too many to mention. But one who was represented by CWU Rep and saved from being sacked for bad sickness record, then became a manager as apparently previous sickness record is then cancelled. Was later 'offered' VR. Then accidentally tripped over a pod and went off sick for months until given a transfer to another office.

One guy at my old DO back in the day when we used pouch boxes would go around said pouch boxes and nick parcels from them became a manager.

You can understand why posties would want to be managers. There are a LOT of perks:

1. You don't need to walk half marathons or deliver a mountain of parcels every day in all weathers
2. You get a higher salary plus decent performance bonuses
3. You get to park right inside the delivery office when every else has to either pay for parking, has parked miles away or find other transport
4. You get better career progression and the old adage of "who you know not what you know" rings especially true in RM
5. You are not forced by SISO. Most of our managers have buggered off early on Saturdays whilst everyone else has been told to clock out on time
6. You get to mess about on computers all day doing "admin" work

But these perks are offset by the pressure that they still need to cut costs, deal with sickness and unrealistic delivery targets with too few staff. Managers often take the blame from both above (senior managers) and below (us posties). For many managers this creates quite a lot of stress as the goalposts are often moved on a daily basis and there are meetings about meetings and some of them either go back to being posties or quit the job altogether.

For me personally, it's just not worth it - but fair play to anyone who enjoys the illusion of authority as RM goes through its transformation.

Emphasis mine. You think we have no autonomy? COMs should be renamed 'local executive'. Decisions are being made at the regional level and higher, and the implementation of senior management's decrees is what has brought us to the scatalogical clown show in which we wallow today. Most managers will admit in private that the service is monumentally f****d up. In a few instances (successive Network Reviews) they've even publicly expressed their opposition, but nothing ever stops the juggernaut.

I have always said it, if these “managers” had to look elsewhere they would struggle to get a job cleaning floors in McDonald’s. Done over 20 years in Royal Mail and the good ones mostly ended up going back to being posties as were too nice. The worst ones were made for the job. You have to be a certain type of person to fit that role and not a very nice one!

Royal Mail faces enormous challenges but they can't overcome those challenges because all their managers are s**t.
