Would you recommend joining DPD?

I am burnt out at Royal Mail and want out. I know some people may say that did will be jumping from the frying pan into the fire but I would like a fresh start and working independently and just doing parcels would be better than 3 days worth of mail every day! My office has been hit hard and I feel swamped more than most. The job is an employed role. Should I go for it?

Thought about that, just been doing this so long now feel like quitting would be weak but there’s got to be something better than how this is going. It is gruelling having Xmas levels of parcels and being expecting to do 1st class and as much other mail as possible. The seconds class and other stuff is building up. Always trying to catch up. Don’t feel like I can take a day off as I will come back to double or triple mail.
I do have days off of course sometimes but yeah c rap.

Pretty certain you have to supply your own van or lease one from DPD, look at the reviews on Indeed or Glassdoor as they usually give a good indication of what people who work for, or have worked for, think about the job and the company.

Why don't you go and get your class 2 licence.
It would then open up more opportunities to get some Monday to Friday day work. Yes you finish later in the day but if you can get a job where you have a full weekend off then it won't be so bad. You would probably earn around £6-7k more a year it won't be anywhere near as physical on your body as a postie.
Jobs like working for say Warburtons, Brakes would be better than this. You may need to get some agency work for 6 months just to get the experience on your CV. One of my mates left Royal Mail 5 years ago to do class 2 and his wage is over £40k a year, he's home for teatime and gets weekends off. He said the change of job is unbelievable.
Trust me and I know this from a lot of sources who are in the game, there is a shortage of HGV drivers.

Also not sure I'd fancy continually driving all day, it's bad enough just commuting to and from work and also getting stuck in the school run traffic on the way back to the DO most days.

Agree 100% with this. I have an LGV Class C licence though haven’t used it for many years for pretty much these reasons.

Probably not for everyone no but I'm 52 now (not sure what age you are) but can you see yourself doing this job which will likely become harder than what it is now into your 60s?

I consider myself a fairly fit person, I'm not overweight at all but I'm starting to struggle physically now especially with niggles now in my feet and knees which does worry me seeing as I've still got 15 years (potentially) left in this job. Niggles will usually be an early sign of that turning into a bigger issue.
I honestly believe Ill health will get a lot of us on retirement grounds before actually working to end even if some don't see that now, I didn't see that 5 years ago but the workload 5 years ago isn't what it is now.

I guess I'm giving options that pay better than this job that are less demanding on an ageing body.

What alternatives would you say there were that would be less physical to someone getting older with no other trade that pays ok? Serious question as I can already see how things will pan out in Royal Mail for someone getting older?

I can’t think of anything worse than being a multi drop driver. Especially for DPD where you have a time period where you have to be at a certain address. Sure, I have no doubt their software works out the route for you etc but you are constantly up against a deadline. Not to mention driving around here is a nightmare with traffic build up constantly. Maybe try reversing the type of delivery you do e.g. try a rural if on a town or vice versa.

Driving a wagon is monthly paid.
It can be very long hours and some can’t adapt.
If you mean driving a 600, that is different.
