Failing tracked, and bringing back – duty too big
I’m a duty holder on a shared duty. It became so massive that I’ve been regularly failing tracked for at least the last two years. Managers obviously moan if I simply fail tracked, so I usually scan those parcels as No Answer. Other colleagues that also can’t complete scan what they bring back as Inaccessible. If my duty partner is off, I’m told to leave all post and take out just the tracked. And it’s impossible to clear all tracked in my hours. I tell this to managers and they just say I have to complete tracked. No help or alternatives given. I continue to bring back parcels. Letters just pile up. Some roads with less tracked have post once or twice a week.
Many posties in the same position here? My concern is obviously some type of conduct, which already happened in the past one day that I refused to take out tracked that I 100% knew didn’t had time to deliver. So I take it all now, full van, and bring back what I can’t deliver.
Don’t bring up the CWU, they’re totally useless. They only say “start time, finish time”; or to put a grievance, which I did put years ago, and was a waste of time. I kept complaining to the union and they banned me.

As long as you tell the manager that you have an unachievable workload and you will struggle to complete it's up to them to try and cover some on overtime.
You won't be the only postie in this position at the minute, the tracked are getting to insane levels.
The correct scan should be delivery not attempted on the indoor section of the PDA.
No answer or inaccessible is false reporting and if a customer complains you leave yourself open.
Ask your manager what he wants you to scan it as. If he says inaccessible or no answer ask for it in writing.
If you are regularly cutting off they may try to performance manage you so don't do anything stupid like going out of area on delivery or idling in the van, I'm sure you are not.
Other than that nothing they can do.

Agree with Micky.
I will add, record all conversations you have with Manager.
It can be done on your mobile phone, they do NOT need to know & yes they can be used for future reference.

I'll assume that as a duty holder you're probably one of, if not the best at knowing the round, organising things, knowing which customers may be in, and where to leave things etc.
So that leaves just the time to do the tracked - literally drive round to each address and delivery them. Some will slot through the letterbox and some will not. If letters aren't going out then - and this may sound radical for some here - I would not touch prepping the frame(s) with mail. I would suggest you maximise the outdoor time.
Would this save you time in the morning? Obviously, the letters have to be prepped but park concern that for now.

Just talk to your manager, you dont have time to complete what does he want you to do? Dont make the decision by yourself that opens you up to conduct.

Exactly. OPG delivery staff don't get paid poverty wages to make the decisions, however COMs do get paid 45K plus bonus to.

Have you got a copy of the commit to deliver agreement?John Gaita wrote: ↑05 Sep 2025, 23:33I’m a duty holder on a shared duty. I don't get why posties give items incorrect scans just to please the managers and help them get their bonuses. It's not like we get anything for doing it. If a manager asks you to scan items you bring back due to running out of time as anything but 'delivery not attempted' then they're breaking Royal Mail policy and so are you. I have this in writing from our lead COM and I have reported four managers for asking me or others to do this. Nothing's happened to them of course but they no longer ask me to do it.
I've been scanning Tracked I can't do as Delivery Not Attempted for three years now. Our previous managers used to wet their pants, pull me into the office, try to harass me etc but I stayed firm and asked for it in writing. No managers have the balls to do that, or even the balls to put in writing that Tracked is a priority service. They're not and so I don't prioritise them. This has gone as far as a grievance and HR and no-one can show me where it says they're to be prioritised as they know that's breaking the USO and thus the Postal Services Act.
Today - 41 Tracked brought back and nine non-Tracked. I think that's my new record.

Indeed, but I think some offices are so far gone the copy most managers are working from has changed the bit about if it is not possible to deliver "all" mail. Their version probably reads as: if it is not possible to deliver "any" mail.
All inline with the local "work plan" though!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Ask the manager what they want you to do, put the ball in their court, it`s what they get paid vast fortunes to decide. Work to time (unless you want o/t).

Re: Failing tracked, and bringing back – duty too big
The number of tracked has skyrocketed in the last few years. Really tracked 48 should fall in line with regular second class stuff but they want it prioritised along with more premium items. First class mail and parcels should really be ahead of these.
