This may have been touched on before.
Are the machines not geared up to do IPs?

SP will be here in a minute to copy/paste some nonsense. But the reality of it is, these guys sitting at machines all day, their only job is to unjam them every 10 minutes or so. It's a machine, it needs a human being to watch it. :wave These people get paid more money than you.

Eventually they'll have machines to watch the machines and machines watching those machines. It'll all be machines all the way up and down and humans will be in these pod things and used as batteries. There was documentary in 1999.

They can walk sort and walk sequence, they've been able to do that for well over 10 years. Sounds like there must have been a posting which jams to readily. Were both orange barcodes the same length on the items, the CSS machines will reject items that have been "short coded" (bottom barcode part missing) as they won't be able to see the data they use.
