Which part of the new delivery model is supposed to reduce fatigue?
I just don't get what part the union are actually on about when their aim is to reduce fatigue? The only thing I can think of is that most people will get to have 1 in 3 weeks doing packets and 1C but having double/treble mail everyday is surely increasing fatigue?
Things I don't understand:-
If an office chooses a 4 day week then does that mean duties would be automatically changed with some collapsing to make them longer as we would need to work a lot longer then if that was the case then would there be more potential VR's on that office?
Also the 4 day week option the CWU mentioned didn't have any indication of how many Saturdays people would work, same with the 9 day fortnight's also doesn't mention how many Saturdays we would be getting!!!
I've heard two trial offices have opted for 2 in 5 Saturdays off? Not sure if this will be the best (of a bad bunch) of options most offices would go for. 2 Saturdays in 6 sounds pointless when there is the other option to go for 2 Saturdays in 5?

Re: Which part of the new delivery model is supposed to reduce fatigue?
It simple, they don't. It's about doing more with less. Have a look at the 'menu of options' which is more 'a horror of choices'. The CWU have agreed to split days off so workers get no quality time off. Once again the CWU has decided to s**t all over part time workers. There's a horror where the floater or 'doc' as the CWU call it now is employed to work four days, no day off, and the days are spread across the week. It always been the case that the CWU hates part time workers but this is a new low.hewittinspain wrote: ↑04 Mar 2025, 21:02I just don't get what part the union are actually on about when their aim is to reduce fatigue? I wouldn't want to be on a 40 hour contract with a 4 day week. Long days. Walking absolute miles.
The CWU should get us all an extra paid week of annual leave.

The CWU are content that the 40 hour contracts walk for hours and hours. Martin Walsh said it - longer outdoor spans secure jobs. Martin couldn't do it so why should workers?

Reduce fatigue
We will be on delivery (at times in 20+ heat or heavy, freezing rain) for 6+ hours.

Re: Which part of the new delivery model is supposed to reduce fatigue?
Actually I take it back - as I understand it now 40 hour contracted workers will probably have the same size duty as everybody else....tramssirhc wrote: ↑05 Mar 2025, 06:31The CWU are content that the 40 hour contracts walk for hours and hours. but what I don't know is - what do the 40 hour posties do extra to fill their current 8 hour days. Do they do more sorting in the morning? and how would this look under a 4 day week and potential 10 hour day?
If that is the case - then it's not so bad, but still - a 40 hour worker doing those hours over 4 days doesn't sound too good, but you'd have to survey them to find out how they feel.

What does A, B and SPARE mean?ted_e_bear wrote: ↑05 Mar 2025, 06:544 day week rotation sat off every 3 weeks
9 day fortnight sat off every 4 weeks
I didn't know they were proposing a 4 day week every week.... I'd definitely go for that, just not sure those on 40 hour contracts would.
If the 40 hour guys have the same delivery span as those on less hours, and they are simply going to be doing extra sorting for the extra hours they do - then it's not so bad.

Maybe they meant ‘delivery of biscuits fatigue’ as it must seem like a long walk from the nearest shop back to the ‘negotiating’ table with those hobnobs.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Re: Which part of the new delivery model is supposed to reduce fatigue?
I'm guessing that A and B on the 9 day fortnight means parcels+1c each person only on 2 of the 4 duties as it's only showing on Saturdays, spare presumably as only 2 out of the 3 due to be in work are needed.norris9 wrote: ↑05 Mar 2025, 08:12What does A, B and SPARE mean?ted_e_bear wrote: ↑05 Mar 2025, 06:544 day week rotation sat off every 3 weeks

It looks like if you're the day off cover person you do mon-fri every week is that correct ?

Re: Which part of the new delivery model is supposed to reduce fatigue?
Good question. Ive been wondering the same thing. From what I can see it doesnt. At all. Unless you count the time off in a 9 day fortnight which gives you time to recover. We have lots of fatigue sickness in our office already ie back/knee/hop injuries and most of us are on a regular 5 day span. Take that day out and lots of older workers will be in real trouble.
In fact the USO changes will increase fatigue. Simple maths. The call rate will ramp up dramatically. Unless they REDUCE the size of the walks, and we all know they wont youll be expected to walk further than you are at the moment. WITHOUT a day off in the week. They can sugar coat it with the phrase "more Saturdays off" but youre also giving up your long weekend in many cases.
My take on it is the EP group have let the union come up with something to keep them happy while he gets the paperwork signed. Once the ink has dried he is going to say the business is unsustainable in its current form and jobs will go. The new USO changes will be rushed in as a quick fix ie instant savings. The timing of it all is too convenient. OFFCOM havent even released their report yet. They wouldnt invest this much time and effort on a scheme in the hope that they will be released from their obligations. It's a done deal. So was the sale. If you listen to the union, it appears that D Cretinsky has bought RM just so we can have more saturdays off. No job losses, less walking and more free time. Billionaires dont become billionaires by being nice.

Even if the DO you worked in was fully up to date and also fully staffed I can't see how anybody is going to regularly clear 3 days mail, or 2 days heavy mail, including D2D's. Although it's RM's/CWU's mess to worry about not ours.

As commented on this forum , the 40 hour contracts are going out in a pairing, getting back and going back out as a singleton.norris9 wrote: ↑05 Mar 2025, 08:02Actually I take it back - as I understand it now 40 hour contracted workers will probably have the same size duty as everybody else....tramssirhc wrote: ↑05 Mar 2025, 06:31The CWU are content that the 40 hour contracts walk for hours and hours. It reduces fatigue by causing more long term sickness and injuries. Then once you're off you get to have a lovely rest on the sofa or hospital bed and recover.
