Transfer DO and contract

Post by maggotman »

Evening guys and gals ,
Can anyone shed light on this for me ...

We have colleagues transferring into our delivery office retaining the 35hr contracts they were on at their previous office.

Current PT staff at our DO are not offered a uplift in contract even though the staff getting transferred in on better contracts have less seniority . Is this correct procedure ?

Struggling to understand how staff with very little seniority can come into a new office and retain the 35hrs while longer serving staff are left behind?

Yes it stinks it's happened at our place and manager said got told he had no choice, surely any incoming staff should be told/offered the hours available as it would mess up your office budget ? Plus as you say it's just wrong on other levels as it's unfair on the existing senior staff who would take an increase in hours if offered.

Not sure if there's actually anything you can do to prevent it happening though apart from having the CWU being vocal about it saying the job should be advertised internally first etc, actually having said that I think it might be in an agreement somewhere that should be the procedure but these days agreements seem to be ignored

If the job wasn't advertised then yes you can do something about it.

Seems very unfair. PT staff at our place with 15yrs service and fairly new entrants moved in on 35hrs
This is not the first time it's happened and its been done tjtoigjbthe back door. Only the manager and union rep aware

Also made aware of colleagues in our office totally bypassing the seniority criteria to get FT jobs . All done without transparency although rep was aware

A lot of underhand stuff going on recently. New starters given duties without them being advertised, albeit on a part time contract still. Not sure if these are instructions from on high or local rogue managers.

I reread your original post. If it's a whole office transfer then that shouldn't have an effect as the work will have transferred too.

Our office has a situation where staff have left and some part-timers have found themselves on fixed duties and work full-time hours everyday without them being advertised. I was talking to one of the part-timers in our office the other day who has been complaining about this because often he comes in and doesn't know what duty he is on because it is always being changed. The Union rep's standpoint is that managers can do this based on "operational needs" but you can understand why some of these staff appear to be quiet quitting.

In light of those who are less senior being made up to full time on fixed duties I think it can only be resolved with a full office revision and re-pick but its not just most long standing posties who don't want to change, but managers as well. If any method change is going to work successfully there has to be a complete structural change somewhere down the line.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
